I was drilling out the broken stud in my yoke, as a temporary fix, until I can fix it right. I`m doing as diesel4me did, drilling out the the yoke all the way though, then using a 5/16ths bolt/nut. The 5/16ths bit didn`t seem like it was making much progress, so I went in with a smaller bit..and, it broke. So now I have a broken bit in there, probably 1/8th inch. What now?:o:o:(

I have an extra yoke, but I was leary of replacing it, without knowing exactly how to do it right, because I won`t be able to replace the crush sleeve. This is a 10b front, if it makes a difference. Thanks guys!

SImple, jus drill out the old bit. Ive done it many a times. You may have to get a super hard carbide bit or something, but it can be done.

It`s either that, or swap out the yoke, but I`m just leary of doing that, knowing that I`m not doing it right (replacing crush sleeve)

id swap the yoke. Unless you overtighten the nut, youll be fine.

id swap the yoke, i remove them at work alot to change out leaking pinion seals. and hardly ever swap a crush sleeve, before you remove the nut and yoke clean it well, mark the front of the nut and mark the pinion next to the the marking on the nut. remove the nut, change pinion seal, install new yoke. (put some thread sealer on the splines of the yoke sometimes they leak past the splines) tighten the nut till there is slight up and down play look where your markings are and continue to tighten till marks are ligned up and play is gone. when im done i usually peen the nut to be sure it doesnt loosen up. hope this helps. also this is alot easier with an impact gun, you just have to take your time on assembly as not to over tighten

Thanks guys. For now, I just pulled the shaft out so that I can drive it. I`ll look into it later.

u should beable to swap off the yoke no problem, my bro has done it 3times now haha and my other friend 2times all on ten bolts my bro's front and friends rear, all they did was take an impact to the nut take it off, put new one on and crank back down.

I pull yokes all the time to replace pinion seals, just impact the nut off, remove the washer, remove the seal, install new seal, the other yoke, washer, LOCKTIGHT the nut and torque it back on 80ft/lbs. Dont impact the nut back on and you might have to hammer the old yoke off after the nut and washer is off.

Ben I have an extra crush sleeve if you really want to do it right. But, You really don't have to.

Simple pay MORE then 10 dollars for a drill bit, then it is good drill it out.

if you remove the yoke I fill in behind the nut with RTV to make sure it is seald

Thats what I figured. I`m still undecided..but I can`t wait to long:crazy:

Just replace the yoke. Just don't tighten the nut enough to crush the crush sleeve any more and you will be fine. To replace the crush sleeve you would have to tear the axle down. You can't set pinion bearing preload correctly with the ring gear in the axle. I don't think that you want to tear in down completely do you? Just take the nut off. Remove old broken yoke. Install new/used yoke. Tighten the pinion nut to about 80-100 ft lbs and your done. If your still chicken then start drilling. Just don't try to replace the crush sleeve without tearing the axle down. PM me If you need some more help.

Well, I`m still chicken:o I bought a cobalt bit yesterday, so, let`s hope that does the trick. If not, looks like I`m replacing a yoke...
