I've always used cribbing under my standard stands. I see zero point in getting massive jack stands just for the height, and having to deal with the massive footprint...the small stands get in the way enough, I don't need to double or triple the space they take up on the ground too.
As for the hi-lift/farm jack, in 20+ years of playing with off road trucks personally and for work purposes, I've yet to find any situation involving lifting a vehicles that couldn't be done better and safer with some other method than the hi-lift...the hi-lift just is the quickest method for most people. Kin d of like how many people go straight for a winch cable when their first attempt at an obstacle fails...
