Towing a project on a trailer is nerve racking?Well I went to Illinois yesterday (from Cincinnati) to pick up this 79. View attachment 525490View attachment 525491View attachment 525492
A nerve racking 400 miles at 50mph later and I got it home. Needs rust fixed around the windshield frame, and a new windshield. Some patches in the floors, battery tray, dash frame, speedometer and gas gauge fixed, seat cover, and dash pad just to name a few things. I’ve wanted a crew cab square body for a long time now, I’m excited for this build, more to come.

Yikes haha you’re not kidding. The drive there was fantastic. It was just heavy for that trailer, windy on my way home, didn’t feel very stable and liked to sway easily. I had a couple moments of fishtailing that scared the crap out of me.Towing a project on a trailer is nerve racking?
Every project I picked up, I got somewhat running and drove home, sometimes as far as 500 miles, an a few times during a storm.
One time I picked up a truck with the engine sitting in the bed so I bolted a tow bar on the front, and halfway through, the frame broke on one side and the truck was rolling next to me.
That is nerve racking.
Anyway it looks like a nice project, looking forward to the progress
Thank you!Awesome, congrats!
It looks like the placement on the trailer is good and you have the axles on the trailer further back, I wonder why you were fishtailing. Check the springs and spring hangers.Yikes haha you’re not kidding. The drive there was fantastic. Thank you!
Yeah I don’t know, the trailer is older than the truck, so there’s a good chance it needs some work. I pulled my K5, a G20, and Jeep YJ home on it. The van and Jeep both 4 hours away and didn’t have the same issue. I would think the van is about as heavy as the truck but google says the truck has about 1,000 lbs on the van. It’s my dads trailer and we’ve talked about fixing it up anyway so it won’t see another trip like that without work. It’s been an awesome trailer though. It looks like the placement on the trailer is good and you have the axles on the trailer further back, I wonder why you were fishtailing. I don't see why it would other than some defect in the suspension
Tow rig, needed something to haul a 5th wheel camper. It’s not the most practical choice but one of the coolest. Short term is getting is fixed up a bit and driving nice. Long term plan is getting an axle under the front. What's the plan? 2wd tow rig? Nice truck.
I’ve seen your flat bed build, it’s awesome!I've got an '81 Crew cab C30 with a 454 and 4 speed. I love driving it. Mine is a flat bed farm truck. I recently added a gas engine welder and air compressor to it to use it more as a service truck. I love driving it. I also need to add a front axle to it so I can use it in the mtns for firewood and stuff.
Guys would kill for those Alcoa wheels. Looks like you got a rear axle seal or wheel seal leaking.
I had a regular cab 2wd camper special '78(?) with a 454 and automatic once. It had 4.56 gears with the camper special package.
Thank you! Me tooNice snag! Definitely digging the Alcoas!!!
Thank you! Haha that’s my parents family van they bought new in 03, honestly one of the best and most reliable vehicles I’ve ever seen. That's a great truck you got!
I'm also jealous of your tow van. It's not "standard issue" white and it's got the rare side doors too.
