I'm looking to buy a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.0 Inline 6 under the hood. I don't know much about the Jeep enigines but I do know that those 4.0s can usually go forever. I'm going to go look at it in the morning and the guy said it has the typical lifter ticks while it's cold until it warms up then you never hear it............. Is that true? Is it a common thing for the 4.0 Jeep engines? If not, what could it mean by way of problems or whatnot?

Thanks in advance.

Most all straight sixes have some lifter noises, especially when cold...piston slap is common on many of them till they warm up fully also...I'd be wary of a loud knock that lasts several seconds on a cold start ,then dissapears when oil pressure builds up--thats an indication of a loose rod or main bearing...sounds like a woodpecker..--some inline engine do that anyway though, due to the oil filter being mounted sideways, oil can dran back into the pan if it lacks a check valve or its stuck open and make some bearing clatter till oil gets pumped to them..

our Grand Cherokee (93) has 200k+ miles...they are damn near indestructible...IF you use a little care.

it had over 150+ when it was given to her.:waytogo:

it has it's noises...but it keeps on ticking...(in a good way):pimp:

I have 2 WJ's between my dad and i right now. The 00 is at 174k and 04 at 72k. I've never heard a valve tick on start up from either of em. My 87 dodge is a whole different matter :doah:.
