So I thought I would update this thread a bit. I like this truck and really I can't say why. Maybe it reminds me of my grand pas 82 k10 with a 6.2. Maybe it is because every summer when the "gypsies" came around to ask to paint our bins and galvanized sheds they always had the nicest looking Dually trucks and I always wished we could have had trucks that nice. Anyway, despite the fact I should just sell most of my old junk and buy an new truck, I keep thinking of fixing this one up to be my "farm truck".
So since I have decided to keep it I have been collecting parts.
So far I have: A 2000 N/A 6.5 from a P30 (frito lay truck) & 94 NV4500. I just bought a 90 suburban radiator support and now a 81 tach cluster. I plan to use the engine speed sensor on the 6.5 that was used for the 4l80e to run the tach. The trucks is fairly nice with one rust hole on the driver side where the door seal has a crease that allows water to run into the truck. It also has a pin hole in the same side rocker. The box on the other hand is pretty beat up. Both fenders have pretty major damage and the top of the box has been rubbed hard by a trailer. I am up in the air about if I should find a nice box or go flat bed. I think a flat bed would be nicer on the farm and allow a me to install a welder generator and possibly an air compressor and torch. On the other hand I live near Marty and he thinks boxes look the best and we all know he can't let stuff go. I mostly am renewing this to keep track of stuff for myself and this will be very slow in coming.
I have torn the manifolds of the 6.5 and apparently it was used in a tug boat at some point because the bolts were less than 40%. 3 bolts broke off and will have to be removed by welding on nut or drilling and tapping at the machine shop. The pump has been sent off and been rebuilt to 4911 specs (93 6.5 turbo specs). I am planning on rebuilding the engine checking for cracks in the main webs. I plan on ARP studs and felpro head gaskets. I am still unsure about new injectors and if I will reduce the compression. If you want to argue with my choice of engines you are welcome to due it in the other thread I have about the engine choice.
https://ck5.com/forums/threads/so-lets-have-a-serious-cummins-vs-6-5-discussion.321683/ I am still unsure about what transfercase or how to adapt it to the NV4500 or what bell housing to use. Well that is about it for now.
This is a picture of the cluster, I will use the oil pressure (0-80 instead of 0-60 like a gasser) and use the numbered temp gauge in stead of the C-H one in this cluster. I pry paid too much but the 80-81 tach cluster seems much harder to find than the 73-79. I wanted the font/style to match or I would have just used the tach cluster from my 79 K30.
