K5 Blazer Chassis Problems In Australia

I bought a K5 Blazer going back afew years and have spent big $$$ on it. I started a full off chassis rebuild and saw that the chassis has been modified for the conversion in a non conventional manner leaving it prone to structural cracks (already visible). These cracks are running through the fabricated box joints.

Can these chassis be welded at all or is there any other chevy models that would be interchangable in chassis with a 77 k5 blazer cheyenne? (c10, etc) I am on my own here in Australia and no-one around me has a :doah: faintest on these units. Any advice would be appreciated.

The frame can be welded as well as be fully boxed to strengthen it. Using a pickup frame will not work well with a Blazer, you would need to find another Blazer to interchange the frame with.

If the crack is at the steering box there are kits to stregthen that area, and a cross brace to prevent it from happening again.

Where exactly are the cracks at?

Is the truck right hand drive?

There's a member here Down Under with a C10, and its steering is ... weird, of course, for the RHD. It was modified in-country, with a GM box on the right hand side in a subframe... very nice, actually, like the braces we use here.

If yours is LHD like ours, then a steering brace is in order, possibly some frame welding.

Where is your frame issue? Pix maybe?

Where the Frame has been parted and welded

The rhd conversion was done before i bought it. Whoever was possesed at the time cut the rail out and put a box in the section to offset the original steering box. Sad job really but the rest of the truck has a perfect bed and only alittle rust in the drivers door jam so it is worth finishing the project.

The cracks are located in their welding. Would anyone be able to point me to a person who might have a right hand rail for sale and a front cross brace for sale? (not the cross memeber but the front brace as this one has been cut)

If i can come across one i will remove the rivets and rivet the new rail on. I know this is a bit of a mission being located in Australia and all but some tasks have to be carried out. Doing it this way, i can carry out a succesfull, strong conversion as i am going the 4" spring lift (i am getting the springs built here) with the front spring hanger not supported properly, i am asking for trouble.

All help greatly apprciated and i am happy to see there are people like you here willing to help a member like me here in Australia. You mention a K5 Blazer here in Australia and alot of Chev part dealers just point me to a K10 trying to reasure me that it is hard to find K5 Parts or Trucks here so it must be a K10. Countless of phone conversations which go this way. (makes me more determined to finish my project)

I am open to any suggestions and resources.

Cheers Frank.

The box above was constructed and inserted by cutting out a section in the rail, i want to replace this are here with an original rail, hopefully the complete rail. I sandblasted the whol chassis prior to these photos to start working from a clean frame. Here, as can be seen, it is sitting in Zinc chromate super etch.

After looking at your pic and he pic from the other build it looks like something that had to be built to house the steering box. If you replace that part of the frame what are you going to do for the box?

Any Chevy frame section will work for a replacement. Unless your dead set on originality you could do just about anything to fix it.

Chev Spares

Chev bought out a new steering box here that is identicle to the old steering box except for the difference being, it bolts up on the outside of the rail in the original holes (the box has reverse mounts for RHD chevs, developed for rhd countries) All Good.

Contacted AussieK5? He seemed to know a bit about these things and was able to get parts.

Most parts for a K10 will fit a K5 just fine.
