Thanks a bunch for the feed back, I'm starting to reconsider the my usage for this vehicle. I think that reliability and ease of repairs is really the focal point. I'm gonna have to keep kicking around the options for a while!

For realiability I would probably go with a 6.0L swap. As others mentioned you want torque out of the motor a 5.3L just wouldn't do it for me. The newer motors IMO are light years a head of the 50's lawn mower technology.
I went the 383 route just for the ease of install and I probably have $3500 into mine. I have edelbrock etec aluminum heads and lunati roller cam. I have the bored out 54mm BB TBI. It produces TONS of torque and spins the 35" tires with ease. Acceleration is nuts. If I did it over I would probably stay away from eagle rods and go with a scat kit.
