Has anyone modfied their 73-87 chevy to use kid car seats that use the car seat latch system. We have two britix carseats that we use in our 2006 ram with the latch system. Im going to need to being hauling my two young kids in my 85 k10 with non locking seat beats. Currently i can only put one carseat in using the center belt. Havent had any luck with getting a seat secure with the shoulder belt. I havent found any information on using carseat in older vehicles. So i was thinking of getting some of the latch system mounts from the junk yard. Hope this makes since, first time ive posted from my phone and still getting use to it.

If the seat belts in your 85 K10 don't lock then it's time to replace them as they're broken and not working correctly. This discussion was had just recently and every seat belt that is retractable is supposed to lock and if it doesn't then it's broken.

I aplogize if it has been addressed recently. Earlier in the summer i searched threads and haventbsince. So locking your refering to when you jerk on the belt when pulling it out that it locks? Since ive had my kids ive always had them in the family rig which is new enough for the l
atches

Your shoulder belts should definitely be locking. My front belts retract slowly, bind up if not perfectly straight, and generally are 20+ years old with lots of use but they lock up solid when jerked on.

when putting a car seat in with an old peice of crap Chevy seat belt I pull the seat belt hard to get it to lock down. Its a pain to do but not that hard.

As far as the mounting points go I would think you would need to do some substantial beefing up around the mounting points.

I don't think the mounting points themselves are placed a certain way except to hold the car seat very tightly.

But I certainly think it is not only doable, but safely so

Right now the truck has a set of suburban buckets. So I'd need a bench back in it to fit both car seats.

My cousin has my old seat which the PO put in seats from a 93, 60/40 bench. I then undid their hack job and made a 1in stock subframe for the split bench that bolts to the factory mounts.

He isn't using the seat and I thought if possible I could attach the latch mounts to the sub frame.

Take the shoulder belt and pull it all the way out. Then feed it back in a little. It should retract with a light ratcheting sound and not let you pull it back out until it retracts most of the way in. This will allow you to lock the car seat down to the seat.

So i was at the shop working on my 89 suburban today, its shoulder belts do exactly as you describe, but they dont in my 85. Need to look for a new shoulder belt I guess.

Mine did lock up when jerked on, but my kiddo would get bounced around like crazy. I used one ratchet strap on the bottom half, and another one on the top half. That kid is SECURE now. I probably didn't need to do that much, but it made me feel better about the whole setup.

This is true.

Most newer kids car seats come with a brasscolored or silver colored piece attached to the underside. It looks to be a letter I. Take it out of its holder and use it to secure the shoulder portion of the belt to the lap strap. It makes a non locking shoulder belt safe for a car seat install. My kenworth has non locking shoulder straps but with that piece I could cinch it down like a lap belt.

What he said. My buddy has used it with his kid's seat in my trucks.
