laying my first beads

You can grind the welds out on that piece and re-weld it...or just make another if you feel it's less work.

I love the retro Xmas table cloth BTW...tres cool! ;)

any better? the top weld has alot of junk on it that just needs to be knocked off, but I think its getting a little better. the one at the bottom, you can see the weird weld in the corner...i blew threw a little bit, so i filled in the corner with a little weld.

I think my hand speed is just right, now i need to get a technique and stick with it

Well, I don't see anymore porosity so that's a big improvement. Tips i have are:

Keep the variables constant...travel speed, gun angle, etc etc from start to finish of the weld and it'll look good.

At the end of the weld let go of the trigger, wait for one second and then hit the trigger for one second to fill in the crater at the end of the weld. Craters are bad...it's where any cracking or failure will always start.

so this piece is good to go? if so, on to the next! got it all clamped together, just need to start welding!

The specs on your welder say 1/8" thick max. How thick is that material you're welding?
1/8"

Here's the other piece, I think the first one came out better, but man is it messy lookin :o

I see a little "crater" on the bottom left weld, need to fill that. The two top right welds have a little porosity in some spots but has definitely gotten better. The top weld looks like my c motion was small, then got bigger as the weld went along. I guess it doesn`t help I`m doing this hunched over on the ground in the driveway either :D

with some grinding, I should be fine, right?

The last picture looks better than the one before it. I'm not an expert by any means, but the advice I've got is to watch the "puddle" and not the tip as you move down the joint. Then as you go, try and keep the puddle overlapping both pieces of metal by the same amount by doing the half moon thing.

If you're testing it on 1/8" material, the welder should be set to it's highest heat setting. You should be ok for exhaust and can probably go up to 1/4" material if you weld both sides.

You might try welding some thinner material on the higher settings to see what it's like as the tip burns through. Then back it down from there as you get a feel for what's too hot.

Edit: If some expert finds any bad advice up there, feel free to correct me on it.

after I grinded em down a little bit, you can see high/low spots. not a lot, but a few speckles here and there..and where it is low, its a little porous. Definitely much better than my first attempt. :D

Well, they're almost done. Need to drill the holes out for the mounts, and paint em up. Looks better than my first attempt, thats for sure! You can see the low spots, and you can also see where I got carried away with the grinder  I put them both in a vice, and I can`t budge either of them! Should be good to go. Am I the only person who would think of throwing so mud on there and smoothing them up?

Try using little circles instead of half moons. Found it alot better for me w/ flux core to keep the size and line. More of the "roll of dimes" look to the welds. Keep practiceing you'll get better....Dave

It's not bad Ben...at least I am seeing decent fusion at the edges and very little porosity.

Keep practicing, and don't be afraid to try different techniques. It's all about trigger time, and getting yourself comfortable. Get a workmate or some sort of table and you'll probably see even more improvement.

TRUE! Don't be afraid of welding....have fun with it!!

Since you have your own welder, just keep playing around with scraps and fusing stuff together. As your technique improves and your welds look better, you'll find yourself finding excuses to fabricate more things for the truck.

That's the truth. There's all kinds of things that would have been several days worth of work to figure out how to fix or make and now I find myself asking "Is that something I could weld?"

I have only ever done a little arc welding, but is there supposed to be that much spatter?
