LED & HID driving light positioning

Looks good Sidetracked. lol.

Im getting ready to order a 40" from you guys for my roof. Still working on the roof rack. gonna be slick. The mounting of the lightbar will be adjustable. :D

My tuck lite lights have great distance but its a 8 inch round light also.

The LED light bars, even in the spot or high speed spot can only reach about 300 to 350 meters/ 984 to 1148 feet max at 1 LUX. Anything below 1 LUX is not enough to really see something. Some LED manufacturers claim 1100m/3608 feet distance, but at .25LUX, so worthless....

Hella does state their distances as max at 1 LUX. For the Rallye 4000 LED it is 540 meters/1771 feet, the Hella 4000 Xenon Euro beam reaches about 500m/1640 feet, the 4000 Xenon Pencil reaches 1290m/4232 feet.

That is quite a bit more than the LED bars can do. The only way to get more distance out of an LED is to shine it into a reflector and then project it out. Hella is the only LED light doing that, therefore getting huge distance.

I´m sure your truck lite 8" lights are bright! But I doubt they´ll reach the distance a good HID does. BUT it also depends on if you really need all that distence. If you just do slow wheeling, you don´t need a light that shines for about a mile. Another thing is, what you are running for headlights. If you run sealed beams (candles) or even a good H4 halogen light, the high beam might reach 150-200m/ 492-656 feet MAX, so an LED bar that reaches 300m/ 984 feet already helps out significantly. In my case, I run Hella 90mm Bi-Xenon (HID) headlights. The high beam on those already reaches a good 300-350m/ 984-1148 feet. So A driving light bar that doesn´t shine further than my headlights doesn´t do me any good. ;) Therefore I need something to reach a lot further to even make a difference.

Everybody needs to decide for themselves what works and what they need for their type of wheeling. I´m just giving my experience on what Lights I have been running and what I found out about them.

And of course, once you get used to a certain distance on lights, it is hard to go back to something that projects shorter! ;)

I might actually sell the OnX and replace it with some RAllye 4000 LED/HID or Rallye compact LED/HID Hellas. The LED bars just don´t have enough distance for my taste....

I was hoping to get used to the short distance of the OnX as the spread is awesome, but I just miss the overall light output of my big HID´s. So 4 or 5 of them are going back on the roof and on the bumper I might add some compacts...

Looks awesome, I like it so much I might go that route. What kind of lights are those

Thanks! Sure, if you like it, go for it! ;) These are TWO Hella Rallye 4000 Xenon (HID) Euro beams and TWO Hella Rallye 4000 Xenon (HID) pencil beams. The original HIDs, no retrofit or cheap ebay conversion.

(the fog lights are Mercedes ML55 AMG Hella fog lights and the headlights are 90mm Hella Bi-Xenon modules (HID low and high beam))

But you can also get the Halogen Rallye 4000 Euro and Pencil, they are very nice and a lot cheaper than these here.

I think they look classic enough to be on that old truck.

So I did some more renderings in MS paint. I have no idea how to start a vote thing for the different options... if someone knows, please let me know...

But here they are. What do you guys like the best?

I like option #1. Those lights with the bright orange surrounds are too big, aesthetically, in my opinion. Whatever you choose, I'd still drool over your truck. :waytogo:

Thank you! Long work in progress! Maybe I should start a build thread sometime... :)

The rings are actually red but I would probably paint them black to blend in better with the bumper. I just took some pics of the lights I had saved and mocked them up. ;)

The LEDs just by themselves (earlier in this thread) just don´t have enough distance for me by themselves. So some kind of HID for the distance is needed. Just want it to look kind of vintage and matching the truck without looking silly, BUT get the best light I can fit...

I have a 50" led lightbar mounted across the roof of my k5.... I mounted it to the rain gutter. I had to aim it straight out because it glared off the hood.

What also helps is to paint the hood flat black. Usually it is a better idea to mount roof mounted lights further back, so the roof cuts off the glare to the hood.

@ALL: any more opinions on the different light setups? Thanks!

Yes with aftermarket gear headlights are futile. I have LED driving light as well.

Why kind/size are the sealed beams that you have in there now?

JW Speaker makes DEADLY LED sealed beam conversions. They're bolt in to the housings. They're also projector Housings for LED complete.

ya i was looking on the jw website. the H4701 and H4703 are L 5 7/8” H 3 5/8”. so a 4x6 might be do-able with some mods

We have them in some of our F550 service trucks. The XL models have sealed beams that these are a bolt in for. DOT approved and wicked output. I love the white light.
