I installed 2 new sending units in my 82 6.2 diesel the other day and didn't notice until they were both in that the ground plug deal doesn't quite line up to match the plug on my truck. It's like it's just off to the side a little bit. I ordered em from LMC and I made sure they were the right ones for my 82. Can I just somehow pop the existing one off and solder it back on in the right place. Not sure if solder is the right thing for this. Looks like it's just zinc coated steel so I might even be able to weld it I suppose. Probably not the best Idea to do it in place but man I would hate to have to pull them out.:doah:

Anybody have any experience with this?

Hmm..looks to me like there is a "left" and "right" sending unit--look at the plug on the other tank and see if the tang is on the opposite side of the plug than the other one...maybe you put the "left" sending unit on the right hand side?...if you HAVE to change anythig,I'd snip off the ground wire part off the plug, not the sending unit, and put a female solderless terminal on the wire,I doubt you'd have any sucess soldering the sending unit ,it'll probably ruin it...

Not one to "engineer" band aids myself, but will the plug fit and completely miss the blade terminal? If so I might think about making a jumper with male and female spade connectors and a short section of wire.

I don't think I'd remove that blade without knowing how its attached. Looks like it might be spot welded to me, and is probably galvanized on one or both sides, bad idea to breach the galvanizing IMO.

Ya the senders are in the right way.

I think my only option is to just make a ground wire with a tang and run it to the frame.

And yes I think your correct that it's spot welded, not soldered.

As an aside, if LMC is a halfway decent company, you show them that pic, and they should comp you SOMETHING.

Of course they'll probably say something like "we'll refund your money, return the item" but you never know...maybe you'll get some credit with them or something.

Can't stand aftermarket parts for this reason...

Ya right. I'm sure they'll say oh ya no problem just send em back and we'll refund your money blah blah blah.

Worth a shot though.

As I recall when I called them with some mis-made parts, they refunded my money and let me keep the parts. In my case they were completely unusable, but in yours, might be worth the hassle. :)

had wrong part from them on cust vehicle at work. called up told them problem and time need's for part. thay got it to me asap and no questions asked.

I've also had the wrong part arrive and they told me to keep it. Good customer service at least in my experience.

good call but the lines would point out the tank the wrong way . unless thay made them backwards.

my pic of left sender in right tank. lines out the wrong way .

I'm not sure ,but it might be possible to use the sending unit on either side by simply rotating it 180 degrees??....I just installed a used tank a member here was kind enough to give me (and deliver it too, from an hour away!),and I just put my diesel sending unit in place of the gasoline one it had,and though I didn't really look closely,I think it'd be possible to turn the sending unit 180,and use it on either side................................................................................................................................................................................................................now that I have the tank installed,I have to get some new hose and swap the lines from my right side leaky tank to the one I just installed--some butcher ripped out the dual tank switches and wiring before I got the truck, and it took me awhile to get the gas gauge working again..probably have the same battle again no doubt...I think I'm going to run a new copper line all the way from the tank to the fuel filter on the firewall too, because the original steel one thats 30 years old is getting real crispy in spots--dont need no failures there during a storm when I'm plowing...
