Longer speedo cable for doubler setup needed

Shh, you want my wife to see that? Any excuse to buy the motor I've been craving is a good one isn't it? ;) How do you think I got all my tools? I think I'm going to go back and grab an 80" cable and see if I can make it fit.

When you're done screwing around let me know and i'll try my best to measure my cable and also take a pic or 2 to show you how it is ran. :deal: :pimp:

Alright, the more I look into this, the more I think I need a 383 stroker crate motor to drop in. That will fix this whole thing...

I like your reasoning for fixing your speedometer cable. Your speedometer must be reading slow if you put in a faster motor, you will get the correct speedometer reading. I often used that kind of reasoning myself.

Absolutely! And if the motor doesn't fix it, then I think the rock sliders I've been contemplating installing would most certainly take care of it because I must be dragging on something somewhere....

Do you ever have one of those days where everything just goes wrong? Went back to Kragen's and got an 80" cable. I tried to run it in the stock location but it is too short. So, I found the shortest route and hooked it up. I go to test drive it and the speedo needle is bouncing up and down like Richard Simmons on a crack binge.

I pull the 80" cable out and go back to the 100" cable. I run it along the tranny using the stock brackets and then have the extra kind of looped farther out into the engine bay where it comes up from underneath and goes into the firewall. Another test drive and the bouncing is minimal, but still present. Now, the original setup, which didn't bounce at all, had an 80" cable with a coupler and a 20" extension on it. It was too long, but it didn't bounce the needle. I'm wondering if the brand, Pioneer, makes crappy cables? At this point I think I'm going to order up a custom 90" cable, which should be perfect, and hope the quality is better.

Then I go to swap in a new radio antenna as the old one snapped off. Of course I get the antenna part all installed and go to put the coaxial cable through the firewall. It gets 90% of the way in and jams. I go to pull it out, and the end rips off. Now I have to go to Radio Shack and see if they have either a coupler I can make to hook up the old antenna line with intact plug, or a plug that can be fabbed on. It just never ends.........:doah:

The cable is less than $20. The cable is brand new, it shouldn't need lube yet should it? I've never lubed a new cable but maybe I should.

Ok, I'll go get some. Having already installed it, I'm thinking the way to go would be to take it off the speedo, pull it back to the engine compartment, unhook the lower from the transfer case and then put the lube in the upper end. I guess I can hook a drill to the lower piece, since the upper is a push on and the cable doesn't stick out, and turn the cable with the lube in the upper. Would that work?

Ok, I'm a moron. I posted the above up before even looking at the cable. I went ahead and uninstalled the cable. Then, I got some of the Kable ease as suggested and was able to pull the cable from the cover. I lubed it up good and re-installed it. Now the thing bounces even worse than before. This thing is driving me nuts. I'm going to go ahead and get a custom one made up that is just the right length. Then I'll run it in the exact stock position, after lubricating the new one of course. If that doesn't fix it, then I'm at a loss.

The bouncing may be that your speedo has finally bit the dust, or was worn out by running it on an unlubed cable.

If the new cable doesn't do the trick, email me and I'll dig up a speedo for you; I have several.

I called the guy from the website I listed above and he had some interesting ideas that I didn't think of. I was going to order up a 90" custom cable. He told me that was expensive and was a waste of money. He gave me a couple of suggestions. He said sometimes if you have enough bends in the cable, it can cause the inner cable to shorten up and not make full contact with the speedo. But, now that I think of it, that end at the speedo has that little brass bushing on it that keeps the inner cable from receding into the outer sheath. So, I'll have to check the transfer case end when the upper is connected and make sure that there is enough inner cable protruding out to make contact with the connector.

Secondly, he suggested that I pull off the lower and hook a drill up to the inner cable. If I run the drill, and the speedo still bounces, then the speedo is shot. If the speedo works fine, then the gear in the transfer case could be shot. I'm hoping it is the plastic gear in the transfer case. That would be an easier swap than the speedo, which is now behind a full roll cage. DrEmu, I'll let you know if I need one, thanks.
