I picked up some 40x17 gumbo mudders and drove em around the neighborhood on 2-4 psi and they rode mushy but ok. I inflated them to 20 psi and got death wobble twice in a quarter mile trip. So basically what psi can i safely run them at on the road? I was gonna run 10. Any reason not to? Not my daily driver.

Low pressure at high speeds means the tire heats up and eventually fails.

10 is pretty low, depends on how far/fast you drive it. I'd look into why you're getting wobble.

It's true that the bigger the tire, the less pressure you need, but you probably still need at least 20psi. If it were mine, I would set the pressure for the best contact patch - maybe up or down a couple of pounds from there - and then deal with the wobble by itself. You probably shouldn't use the tires as giant dampers.

the wobble is in the tires for sure. took off some 40" irok radials that ran smooth as silk at any speed and over bumps. maybe the gumbos just gotta go. gonna swap front to back, see if that makes a difference.

I ran 24 front and 22 rear with my 37" SSRs. They wore really good for the years I owned them.

took off radial and put on old a$$ bias = bad tires shacke for sure.

bias will have some vibration broblems for sure over radials.

and old bias more than new bias .

also any loose / worn / week front end parts with bias = more prone to death wobble.
