LS swap 88 jimmy

Father and Son project
My dad bought a GMC Jimmy a few years ago. It was mostly a basket case with a lot of the parts there with it. We had got it running with what it had and it has stayed parked in the garage most of the time.

This was the oldest picture I have of it. It currently has a soft top with the tailgate conversion.

I bought a 2007 parts suburban for my 2012 3/4. It had a DOD deleted 5.3 that had less than 10k miles.

The suburban was from up north some where (I live in Texas) and had bad rust on the frame and bottom of the body. I took what I needed for the 3/4 ton. And we then decided the 5.3 would be a great swap for the Jimmy.

Today we pulled the 5.3 from the 2007 suburban. It took a few hours but its out and on the bench. It’s always been handy having fork lifts around to get the job done by removing motors lol.

Broke out the pocket book and ordered a few things. Ordered the advanced adapter for the motor mounts and for the 4l60 to a 208 with vss. Bought a set of Mickey Thompson legends 33/12.50/15.

The idea right now is ORD front springs 2” with cross over steering sitting on 33s…going to keep the 1/2 ton 4:56 gears right now and see how it drives. Also have 3/4 ton 4:11 if we need less gear. But we will get to the lift and gears later. Right now just need to get the swap completed and have it going again. Also will be dropping the 4l60 off for rebuild hopefully this week.

When I called they said 2” would work…but I also didn’t specify 1 ton 60 or 10 bolt 1/2 ton. Will just have to double check when ordering. Don’t have a prob with 4” it’s just we are going for a nice fun street cruiser.

I get it. If the last one I bought hadn’t come with tons I’d be perfectly fine rocking 33’s and having a fun steer cruiser. Truck looks nice and I really like that hood.

Got the old worn out dry rotted (date 2006) toyo 37s taken off and loaded up to go get the new tires mounted.

Went down to 4 wheel parts had the new 33/12.50/15 Mickey Thompson Baja Legends mounted. Man tires are expensive now days ($1200)

Still putting parts together for the LS swap and deciding on what suspension we want. Transmission is also a few weeks out for a rebuild. But things are moving forward so far. Here is how it sits on the 33s!

Motor mount plates and transmission adapter came in today from advance adapters. Going to be busy next couple weeks don’t know when we will have time to drop tbi motor and install 5.3 just yet.

I really need another excuse to swap out the L31 I installed in my 85 K20.
Maybe the LS bug will bite me after seeing your build.
Great job and keep it going

Awesome find on the gov rig, especially the low miles.

Looks great! I am collecting parts for my 89 to do the LS swap as well. Have you found any good info on what to keep of the tbi wiring and how to integrate the LS harness?

We were thinking of a stand alone harness. The last one I did had a kwik wire harness and it has been working just fine. I had also put auto meter gauges in that one. Still don’t know the route we are taking on gauges on this one just yet but can keep you posted.

Tcase and trans are out…can’t ever do a swap without making a mess.

Sorry pictures kinda suck. Got what we wanted to accomplish today. Next will be clean up some wiring on the firewall and drop the tank to put new fuel pump. Also going to run new fuel line.
