Found a m1008 for sale for 900 bucks. My daily driver is getting ready to blow and need something quick for cheap. What kind of mileage does the desiel get?

ive seen people get 15-16mpg in the city and 20 on the highway. the downfall for the m1008 is the lack of overdrive and the low gearing (4.56), max speed is about 65mph, while peak mpg is at 1800 rpm. 35's will improve the highway milage, or adding an overdrive tranny, but again thats more money.

35s are cheaper than overdrive. get some used ones, trim accordingly.

a $900 isn't gonna look any worse with trimmed fenders. i'd love to buy a CUCV for $900.

35s are a plus and will help some but don't expect a miracle. 700R4 is probably the cheapest way to get it highway friendly or an axle swap. $900 is a pretty sweet deal for an M1008 all the same.

What they said. That's a hell of a deal even if it is a bit rusty.

You need at least a true 36" tall tire to really start getting the engine into the "happy zone".

the M1008's get 20mpg highway????? my M1009 with 3.08 gears and 33in tires gets 21mpg, cruising 60-65. i cant imagine the 4.56 gears only cause a single mpg drop.......

my truck at 60 should be doing around 1882 rpm,

an M1008, even with 36in tires is doing 2554 rpm.

I missed that. Mine never has. Somewhere in the mid teens at a happy cruising speed.

My 81 Jimmy has the 6.2, and 4.56's and had a SM 465. Cruising at 65 mph it got a steady 16.5 mpg...no more and no less. This was on 40's, and the rpm's at about 2500 or so. On a 37" radial it might have seen 18...

It now has an NV4500, and although I haven't driven it in a while and never got a chance to figure highway mileage with it I'm pretty sure it'd pull down 21-22 mpg on the highway now.

My 83 C1500 cruises at 1800 rpm and regularly gets 25-26 mpg on the highway. The TH400 is a great tranny for being strong, but it also eats a bunch of power and does not have a lock-up convertor so it is also a fuel mileage killer.
