I have bought a few tooling lots on ebay, and now have about 100 taps, a bunch of drill bits, and end mills that I need to store. I would like a multi drawer chest with a billion narrow compartments. What do you all use for storing taps and the like? A lot of them are brand new, and I don't want them banging around in a drawer somewhere. At the least, I'd like to get ahold of the wax they use to coat new/resharpened taps and bits, what is this stuff called?

Fishing tackle box.

I am sure there is a box for machinests like you are talking about but they will probably be expensive. The tackle box might be a cheap alternative that would be fairly useful.

Just a thought at something inexpensive but possibly useful.

I've thought about a tackle box, but I'd need three times as many compartments, at least. I'd like to store the taps and bits individually, I have A LOT of different sizes. Also, once that puppy was full of taps and whatnot, I dont think it would hold together very well from all the weight.

Mcmasters Carr Drill bit storage box.

These might work for you. Some of them aren't cheap though.

Something like the drill bit storage box would be sweet, but I want to avoid payng that much. A billion of the little plastic tubes that some new taps come in would be nice as well.

I think the stuff they use has a high carnauba content, you can peel it all off in one piece. Regular paraffin would just chip off in chunks.

you beat me to it, yes that what would happen. those are probably not too expensive I would'nt think. never priced one though. I would like one also.

it would still protect them though right?
and a litttle wax would come off as soon as you used them

the tap dispencers are way cool but are kind of for quantity. just 1 or 2 taps per size is kind of a waste of space, and yea there pricy. you could look for them on e bay and hopefully get one for a good deal.

Kennedy makes some nice machinist boxes. You can usually pick them up for a reasonable price used on Craigslist or ebay.
