Manual Shift 6 speed 4L80E

So if you used the lockup and the od planetary you could split all 3 gears twice?? that would be awesome!!!

1st 1st-lockup 1st-OD 1st-lockup/OD, 2nd 2nd-lockup 2nd-OD 2nd Lockup/OD, 3rd 3rd-lockup 3rd OD 3rd Lockup/OD,

so basically 12 forward gears?? that would be really cool to have would really keep the engine in the power band

Lockup wouldn't be another gear ratio. It would just be a 300 or so rpm drop in whatever gear you are in.

every time you unlock the converter, it is at the cost of fuel efficiency.

sounds pretty bass ackward to me........... you want to be locked up as much as possible.

engine in the powerband? is this a SBC we're talking about here or a heavy haul I-6 diesel?

please read the first post. also quoted below.

So im not building my chevy right now but this seems like the crowd of people who might know. im building an all wheel drive 1984 buick regal with a 3500 driveline, cab and chassis 14 bolt rear and a supercharged big block on propane and need some insight.

My initial plane was to use a 700R4 but i was hangin out at the shop when someone mentioned they read "on the interweb" that 4L80E can be made a 6 speed. i said nuh uh but thought again all you would have to do is use overdrive as a gear splitter. i been searching all night on this and can only find that TCI makes an entire kit including transmission for this and that everyone says this is not a new idea, its been around since the 90s but it was manually shifted then.

I am perfectly fine with manually shifting if i can get 6 gears out of my 4L80E but i cant find anywhere that tells you what kits is offered or how to do it. any help would be appreciated.

you forgot to tell them your plans for it was for the street and werent to rip through the same mud hole 80 times while diddling your sister in the front seat.
what this guy said

ah yes. so mpg not a factor.

but with that much power. kinda seems like why bother trying to diddle a "gear"......"range" every 1500rpm/ or so. aren't you going to want to wind that MoFo up?

Allison was mensioned before i think....... they are an actual double OD 6 speed. direct is still 4th in them.

doesn't the new allison just use the O/D planetary in the same way to add the extra gear??? I was told its the same tranny as the 5-speed allison just with a different valvebody and controller. and that the older 5-speeds can be converted to the "6" speed

true.

a single planetary gear set has a multiple number of ratios availiable, depending on the actuation of the different members. Depends on what part is Drive, Driven, and reactionary, in relation to Sun, planets, and ring gear.

pretty neat stuff it definitely has renewed my interest in rebuilding my 4l80E

OK, you guys have peaked my interest. Shal we see if we can figure out how to do this on the cheep?

I have a candidate for being the controller for this beast. It can by default control a 4l80e but the software is open source and and be changed to do anything we want.

The real problem I see is figuring out what to change in the hydraulics internally to enable the following shift pattern.

1st = Forward engaged
2nd = Forward engaged, Overdrive engage
3rd = Forward engaged, Overdrive disengage, and Intermediate engage*
4th = Forward & Intermediate engaged, Overdrive engage
5th = Forward & Intermediate engaged, Overdrive disengage, Direct engage*
6th = Forward & Intermediate & Direct engaged, Overdrive engage

* Note that third and fifth are both now dual-event shifts. Stock, a 4L80-E has no multi-event shifts - a major reason why they shift so solid.

So, who happens to have a hydraulic oil schematic for a 4l80e so we can make this a reality? Basically we would be replicating the old Jet kit but be able to make it fully automatic.

Also, does anybody have any of the original Jet installation manuals for the full manual conversion? Those would be helpful.

Cheers,
Rufus

Pffft.... 1000 series allison

:D
you need a 4000 series like this. hes another dude at work tinkering on one
