Well the time has come to replace the 454 in my blue truck. I few too many times above 1400egt when it had the turbo must of hurt it because it runs hot and has pretty low oil pressure so I have decided to pull it and send it to irrigation duty and use the 100k gen VI vortec I have.

The old motor was a stock peanut port motor 7.8 to 1 compression with a street warrior intake, 204/214 cam and headers on lpg (since impco 425)

The new motor is again a stock vortec short block with 781 heads,7.8 to 1, a stock low rise intake and the same headers and again on lpg.

So now the big choice. So when I bought this 454 as a core I was still using a turbo so I bought a mercuiser Mag cam for $35. Knowing the engine will be cfm limited to about 4000-4500 would you use the stock vortec cam or the mercriser?

Stock l29 cam has
204/209 duration 480/483 lift 118 lsa

Mercriser cam has
224/224 duration 483/483 lift and 115 lsa

I am guessing with the 460 cfm carb I will be limited to 4000ish rpm for power (the old 454 peaked at 3950 with a qjet and lpg). Mostly looking for low end grunt but I would guess it is always 2000 rpm or higher. I guess since I have it I may just try it. Suggestions?

p.s. we wouldn't even be having this talk if my buddy and local chassis dyno operator wasn't pushing me to use the bigger cam.

Any boosted engine benefits from a cam with more overlap. The more overlap, the more scavenging that takes place, and results in lower EGTs and cooler pistons/combustion chamber. I say you should go even bigger than that merc cam.

Do you have an intercooler?

Not boosted anymore. That is just how I hurt it.

Oh in that case def go with the merc cam. You might sacrifice some off idle torque but overall power will be much improved.
