Meet "Murphy" the '84 K5

Very cool Pic!!!

Hunting season...the blazer is going on some adventures! got to sleep in the back and survive some 40+mph winds and rain (and survived dry!). Could NOT make it to some places without the nicer tires, 4x4 and the offroad needles in the carb.

Most photo opportunities like that only happen when you don't have a camera.
Great shot!
Nice Ride!:waytogo:

thanks Teck! It's ongoing and has been a ton of work!

kellyjohn, this was one of those rare moments where I had both camera and a good shot to take! just had to be out in the super cold rain to take it:waytogo:

No luck on the hunt though. So far.....

Is it possible for power steering to get whiny and less powerful due to overheating from the big tires/increased weight/etc.?

From what i hear, Yes. I hear that the fluid foams when it gets hot which causes aeration and makes the pump whine.

Steering noise

From what i hear, Yes. I hear that the fluid foams when it gets hot which causes aeration and makes the pump whine.

I'll 2nd that...

Couple relatively simple solutions:
A decent size, dedicated trani cooler for the power steering fluid,
and--or--a remote reservoir to hold additional fluid.
Between the extra fluid and added cooling, the whine should be gone.

I might look into that. I think my steering performance has lasted longer now that it's cold.

Hey fellas, just dug up two more pics from offroad/camping adventures and figured I'd share. Can't have too many pics.

Also, the HD fan clutch and aluminum radiator officially solved all overheat issues! back to a 195* tstat now. I'm also going to start tracking down a power steering cooler. Still need some different diff covers, or at least something not chrome for the front.

Looks good.
I used a B&M cooler for my power steering cooler.

Sooo Clean!!

Wow Tech!!
The undercarriage on that thing looks like you could eat off it!!
Super nice Ride Sir!!!:waytogo:

I have a purple cranium diff cover. It might be a little goofy looking, but the bolts are recessed and you can get whatever color and finish you want. You only need the half spider up front and I think it might be necessary to clear the tie rod. The bolts included are stainless steel. The first set they sent me were not long enough and only grabbed a couple threads. When I called they told me some peoples housings only accepted so many threads but they would gladly send me longer ones, which they did.

It also catches swamp things.

I don't know why the picture is upside down, it is right side up on my computer.

I have asked Kert at diy4x to build me one like his 14 bolt rear. He said he could but he was pretty busy. So maybe if you ask to we can get him to do some sooner.

Bad Review (Offroad LTD)

Thanks guys I'll look into those diff covers.

Well, unfortunately I have to leave my first bad review of any company that has had a hand in the parts for this truck. I was kind enough not to mention it until now in order to give them a chance to make good on the issue, but it seems they've declined.

On my hunting trip, the jack carrier on the rear bumper from OffroadLTD broke (you can actually see the jack sitting on my hitch cargo carrier in the rainbow pic). It broke on the trail up, left several scratches and good size dents in my tailgate along with scratching my softtop (and obviously the bumper itself). The base of the carrier at least kept the jack on the bumper, but the top support broke and allowed it to swing around. In one of the pictures, you can even tell the support is bent.

Looking at the two pieces, you can see where there is powdercoating (about a third the length of the piece) on what should've been unexposed metal. So obviously, it was at the powdercoaters (theirs) it had a flaw. My theory is it was a bad piece of metal and going down the dirt road I live on combined with this last trip was enough to help that spread until it finally failed. My friend, who builds volkswagons in his spare time, suggested maybe the metal was overheated or stressed during welding and that made it a little brittle (it did break along that weld). A fabrication shop owner took a look at the two pieces and suggested it was just a completely unsatisfactory piece of metal and a bad support design.

So I politely emailed Offroad LTD with the situation, explaining the whole thing, suggesting they could send me some tube mounts so I could remount the jack to my front bumper, and anything they thought was fair for the additional damage. The support staff at OffroadLTD (who had been great the whole time) quickly forwarded my email to the president of the company, who then took about a month to reply (and I had to call him to get him to). He did take time to review my emails, which I appreciate, but then responded with a borderline offensive email. For instance, in response to the idea that the metal could've been made brittle and consequently cracked by an overheat during welding, he said "Welding does not initiate or cause cracks. If that were the case nothing could ever be welded together." There were several other comments along those lines. At one point, he suggested if it failed like I said it did, I should've heard it hitting the tailgate. My truck doesn't have much insulation, was going up a steep grade with loud pipes, and had hunting gear bouncing around in the back, so I think it's plausible I didn't hear it.

In the end, despite my photos and testimony, he concluded "it is clearly not a production issue and I fail to find any compelling evidence that it is a material failure on it's own but it rather suggest some other factor may have caused the breakage of the strap from the tire carrier proper."

I responded with an email restating a several points, it's been a business day and a half, and I haven't heard anything or gotten a phone call. I spent $2300 with their company, the bumper failed for no good reason at all (you guys know this truck is 99% highway miles), damaged my truck, and they wouldn't even send me some $60 jack mounts to make it right.

That will end my business with OffroadLTD. I recommend you don't give them yours and take it to one of the numerous other places out there instead. My offroad design front bumper has had zero issues, and I imagine if it did they'd make quick good on it!

Here's a better angle of the weld in relation to the break. Pretty clearly broke right along it.

Victim of the crash??

Seems there were a few replies lost in the crash!!:dunno:

Again--sorry for your experience with poor customer service!

The part does look like a fairly easy fix, but I'm fairly sure you planned on relocating the jack to the front.

Any pics of the end result yet?

holy cow, we lost like two pages of replies! What happened? I'm thankful for everyone that posted. all seemed to agree too, so that's nice.

No fix yet, extremely busy around here! Soon though.

Does anybody want to talk me out of trying to do a body swap to a short bed pickup? or perhaps fabricating something to make it function like a pickup?

Also, I've had some questions on the mounting of the radiator, helpful pics will be inbound soon!

Keep the k5 body. You can find one of the half can insert things and make it like a pickup but still have a k5 at the end of the day
