mig welder...moderators please leave this...

I suppose I am the flip side. I bought the HF 151 because i got it cheap from an auction. I learned to weld with it using fluxcore. It did a great job for the $$ and I was able to build a bunch of stuff for the shop/house my roof rack, lots of brackets and mounts and most of my sliders before it finally died.

I have now "graduated to a Lincoln, but I still use innershield for most things and have no problem at all with it. If you calculate the cost of wire plus gas, unless you buy large volumes, I don't really see much difference.

Same here. Built my whole truck with the thing, and a lot of hossbaby50's rig too.

This board has the mentality of "I won't eat a big mac cause I only eat filet minon" don't fall into that. If all you can swing is a HF one, learn with it. If it is an impulse buy, get something better. For small stuff 1/4" and less it is fine.

Also look at clarke, a bit more adjustabilty and a step up from HF for a samll amount more.

alright so i went out and bought a arc welder....i got a auto darkening lincon eletric helment,2 sets of gloves (1 pair new),some rods for stainless and alimnum and other assorted rods, and the welder....not a bad deal i think for 200 bucks...

Good choice!..

You stole it for 200 bucks!..I have never owned anything BUT an arc welder, though I have used friends and relatives MIG welders..the Lincoln "Tombstone" welder has been the industry standard for years..older ones had all copper windings though, new ones use aluminum--but for a "home handyman" type of use, you'll never know the difference..

I like the arc welder better, especially when welding frames or thicker metal, but I have gotten enough experience to be able to use it sucessfully on body sheet metal too,by using it as a "spot"welder..

If you do buy a MIG welder in the future,I'd avoid any cheap 110V ones like the plauge..I could not even run a bead with one a friend let me borrow,a "Century" 135 amp "flux core wire" version..yet at another friends shop with a 220V Miller Mig,I can weld like a pro,the difference is unreal!..I'd only have a 110V Mig if someone gave it to me free,I'd never waste my money buying one..

well im glad to know i got a good deal...i looked up the helmet it was 100 bucks, the glove i dunno ill say 20 bucks, the rods lets say 20 bucks, and the stand 10 bucks...so that right there is 150 bucks alone without the welder so i think i did alright...the guy also has 50 ft extention cord, but it has 220 on one end and 110 on the other he wants 40 bucks for that i havnt decided on that yet...

id pass on that, that sounds sketchy, never seen a 120-240 cord yet. Or cut the cord caps off and see how much the extention cord is, and also it must be at least 10 guage cord. Just make sure its not a regular orange extention cord braided together and trippled up, thats how mine came and it was super ghetto.

anyone know were i can buy a extintion cord for the welder???i looked on homedepot.com and harbor freight..cant seem to find anything...anyone have one they recomend??

i made mine from homedepot. Get some Carol 600v SO cord 10/3, or 8/3 guage however long you need it(8/3 if longer then 30 ft.), and 2 cord caps, one female and one male.

Yeah I think it was a good deal. You can't really go wrong with that welder ya got. As for the extension cord if you run a 220V welder on a 110 circuit it will either pop the breaker instantly or it will burn the power supply of the welder out. As voltage goes up Current goes down so if you are running 1/2 the voltage you will have more input current to push it. It is kinda wierd to think about. Basically do not try to run it off of 110 with the jerry rigged extension cord that guy was trying to sell you. You can build a good cord with pieces from Home Depot or Lowes like was stated earlier.

Now that you have it get a cord and start practicing:D . Don't forget to post up pics of your practice welds to get some feed back on what you are doing right or wrong.

gimme some instructions on this cord....im no electician by any means...

Go to home depot and get a length of 3 conductor cable that will handle your voltage. It was posted in an earlier response in this thread to use 8/3 cable rated at 600V. Then you buy the connectors (1 male and 1 female) and connect them to the end of the cable. Walla you have a 220 Extension cord.

PM Readymix he made a 20 amp 110 extension cord he could help you out. The process is the same the only thing that changes is price and materials.:D

I WOULD NOT go 220 -> 110... the machine is not built for it

I thought I told him that but re-reading my post I never actually said DO NOT. I did tell him what would happen if he did though:D .
