Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are actively searching for a suspect who stole a fully automatic submachine gun from a gun show at the Metrolina Expo last weekend. The weapon is used by SWAT teams throughout the world. It was stolen from Altamont Tactical Outfitters’ booth at the Metrolina Expo on Statesville Road Saturday. The weapon, a Heckler & Koch HKMP5/10 MM, is valued at $4,000. According to the Heckler & Koch Web site, “Firing from the closed-bolt position during all modes of fire makes MP5 submachine guns extremely accurate and controllable.” Some 6,000 people attended the gunshow Saturday, and police believe the crowds may have aided the suspect. The dealer the gun was taken from said the weapon was laying on a table alone with the rest of his merchandise. Police believe the thief picked up the gun and walked out. He was likely never stopped or checked by security. Some gun dealers said there isn’t nearly enough security at gun shows. No security guards are stationed at the exits at the Metrolina Expo. No arrests have been made.
