You state the rule says you must run a factory available engine - there were no big blocks available in the 67-72 Chevy trucks so that might make a problem for you - guess it depends on how technical they are.

396 amd 406 were all available in those years.
i know because i see a ton of them running around here with the badges on the side. factory badges. and i have worked on a couple of 70's with 406.
all i have seen are 2wd 3/4 ton's though.

406.

[/ QUOTE ] Don't you mean 402? I have never seen a BBC 406. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif Just a SBC 400 bored over like mine.

well between the 350 and 396 I say the 350 because its a great motor and has almost as many cubes as the 396 and what it lacks there makes up for it in WEIGHT...
If your really wanting to build a motor for it you could do like confedneck and do a 377(can also be made out of a 350 with boring it) a 383 works good or a 406(if you want to get a new block) basically what you want for the mud is big HP big tq light weight and hi-rpm motors work good also.... but if your really going to get serious ditch the 4-Speed and get a automatic with a decent stall /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Speaking from experience with my 72 3/4 ton, a 396 is an all around better motor. It revs like a SB and has better torque. It doesn't overheat under any load either. I've taken that heavy som-biatch up Oldmobile hill at glamis, in which I couldn't even make it up half way with the original 350, that ran like an SOB. It lights up 35's on the street too, no problem.

From your few posts I gather you are searcing for mud racing info.
The first place you need to check is the event rules.
I have never participated in an event so I know pretty much nothing on the subject.
But I would imagine that it is pretty much set up like the dirt track roundy round cars.
Certain events for various classes.
It sounds like you are interested into getting into it at an entry leval.
Is this like a DD that you want to see what ya can do or do ya have yer sights on the big guns?
From your other posts you stated that to run in the class you are interested in that you need to have 15" vac at 900 RPMS.
That pretty much tells me that they are not gonna let a lopin SBC into that class. Pretty much sounds like a stock engine class.
I would look into the rules a bit more.
BBC's rule when it comes to HP and if ya have $20 bills fallin out yer butt that is the way to go.
IMOHO with a flatlander rig a well built SBC will be more than sufficent for the task.
If ya have uphill mud drags a BBC is the only way to fly.
IMOHO I would think that a 396 would put you in another class and you would get eaten alive.
Where a strong runnin SBC would at least keep you competitive and a chance to win.
BBC's are nice and all, and I toot the BBC horn BTW.
But the cost of making a SBC run good and a BBC run even better are like night and day when the price starts addin up.
I have built some nasty plants, SBC and BBC and am fond of them both. It all depends on the application realy.
Check the rules and use the advantages to what works for ya. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
