Muddysub's Toyota crawler.

Hump n Bump was a great time, a completely successful wheeling trip! Daisy did great dragging the Toyota there and back and gave me a comfortable place to sleep while I was there. The yota handled everything I pointed it at, without issue. It really surprised me a time or two with the shit it was able to climb. The steering worked great as well, a LOT better than it was.

The trails I drove this weekend were the hardest and most technical I've driven yet. Stuff that Daisy would never make it through, even the tiny little yota took some body damage a few times. Every time I drive this thing I get more comfortable with it. I lift tires a lot and it still manages to feel really stable. Having the gearing options I do makes things much easier. A lot of the time on climbs I'd use double low and set the hand throttle at about 1500rpm. Learning to slow down and let the truck work is key. This thing doesn't really need momentum to bump itself over obstacles like heavier trucks do. The sticky tires really compliment the low wheelspeed, several times I was able to let them spin a little as I work the steering a little and it would claw its way up and over things. I'm just really happy with this truck right now. Haha!

I think the GoPro has decent, free editing software. I used to use one by Adobe, I want to say it was called Premier. I don't remember paying for it, but these days it's probably not free anymore even if it was then. But it allowed me to splice different videos together and crop them, speed them up, etc. Could also add music.

I kinda fixed the giant hole in the floor today. It isn't perfect but it'll keep me from dropping shit through the huge hole in the floor now. I had to cut & reweld the twin shifter to make it fit through a 4" hole. I wish I had something better than self tappers to attach it with, maybe I'll mess with that later. Though I doubt it.

The post trip crawl under the Toyota revealed nothing but a few scratches, no cracks, leaks or loose hardware. Great success!

I was out on the Bitter Springs trail in Valley of Fire park just the weekend before the Hump-n-Bump. That trail is as much as my Crew Cab can do, and even that was a little testy in a couple of situations. Good thing you got the kind of rig that was made to be rolled over, and then just flipped back over and go. There is some videos on Youtube of people that have messed up there daily driver wheelers out there in Valley of Fire and Logandale's trails good.

My dumb ass left the key in the Toyota, turned on, for about a week. I’ve always heard that Optimas can be recovered from a deep drain like that so I gave it a try and sure enough, it came back! Super stoked that I don’t have to buy a new battery.

That’s about all the updates I have on the Toyota lately. I dragged the trailer home last week to take it up to logandale over the weekend but my father in law ended up in the hospital with cardiac issues on Saturday so going wheeling got scratched. I might take it out in a few weeks. We’re going north to cut Xmas trees this weekend and I’m working a desert race in Laughlin NV the following weekend.

I have an idea.
Everyone in the yota crawler world runs Chevy 63” springs in the rear because they flex great, they’re cheap and plentiful. The downside is that 63s would hang waaay out the back of my truck, my frame isn’t even long enough to run 63s. And everyone else is doing it so I’m not. Haha!

A friend of mine ended up with several sets of 1st & 2nd gen Ford Raptor leaf springs laying around his shop which he was about to haul off to scrap, so I had him save me a set. After getting them home and taking a bunch of measurements I think these things will work in the rear of the yota.
Theyre 59” long and the center pin spacing is 32/26” vs 32/32” on the Chevy springs. By mounting a new hanger 4” forward of my current one, I can drop these things in there without having to relocate the shackle hanger. The really cool part is that by doing that, I’ll move the rear axle back 2.5” setting my wheelbase at 110”. (I thought I was 109” all along, measured today and found that I’m actually 107”.) So I’ll gain about 3” of wheelbase and improve my departure angle while hopefully gaining a bunch of flex. Regular old 1/2ton pickup springs like 57” Fords and 63” Chevys flex like crazy in rock crawler applications, these things should outperform those. So maybe it’ll work and I’ll be the one to start something new. Haha!

Chevy 63s flex good on Toyotas. I bet the raptor springs are gonna work great

Id leave the overloads on Scott and the antiwrap clamp. At least initially

Raptor is heavier than your toy isn't it? Gonna be too stiff?
By a lot, yeah. You would think so but I bet these are softer than what’s on it now. Like I said, guys use regular half ton truck springs on Toyota crawlers all the time. And these are softer than those.

That crossed my mind, the antiwrap clamp might help. If/when I do this I’ll leave them alone at first.

Scott, what is the length of those sprigs and how is the pin set? always wondered about putting a set of those in a square.

I was super surprised how my 5 leaf 63s flex in the back of Horton. Just put the full pack in cause I ran out of time and just left em cause they work

They’re 59” eye to eye, center pin(s) are 32” from one end and 26” from the other end. There are two center pins, so Those measurements are taken at the center, between them.

Yeah even on lightweight little Toyotas they flex pretty well. I just welded up a 63” swap on a guy’s 4Runner, his springs were left alone and that thing kicked ass. I’ll leave these things alone and see how they work.

I agree to try it with the anti-wrap first. should be a sweet set-up. I had a set of 52" springs on the back of one of my F-toys and bent them.

I have 52s right now, tuff country EZ rides. One is bent and they don’t work as well as I’d like. The front end does most of the work and any time a rear tire drops into a hole, a front tire comes up.
