My 383 TBI data logs

It takes fuel to make power, so of your cam Is flowing the air, the tune needs to match. Easy right.

Also, are you running cats? Or A cat?.

I'm.not trying to sound like I know what I'm taking about because I am not a tuner, but I have tuned to a gas analyzer before and understand gasses.
But enjoy learning about this.
Ya I know it takes gas to make power. Just was commenting on the AMOUNT of gas LOL. Better be making big power

I have a single High flow cat.

New tune data is attached. Yes the injectors are 60lb/hr and the fuel pressure is 21-22psi. He increased that BPW value to 150

The thing is starting run really really strong!! But also uses a LOT of gas :doah: I can almost see my gas guage move as I drive. I'm not driving normal either though. This thing is actually a blast to drive now.

The logs, are getting better.

These are the changes that were made between the last tune

One thing I am noticing is those BLM numbers are not always accurate.
While driving the car I can sit and watch those numbers. Sometimes I'll get 128 and others I'll get 138 in the same cell. Or adjacent cells will show fine and one in the middle will show lean.

Ideally, the BLM average of at least 1000 counts should average 128 +/- 2. It's not always possible to get 1000 counts. Weather, driving style, altitude can effect BLM average. Is it possible to get a perfect 128, no not really. Is it possible to get averages between 126 ~ 130 on every log every day, no not really. Is it possible to get BLM averages of 126 ~ 130 when the VE table is NOT adjusted for displacement changes and other internal engine modifications, no not really.

In my experience, sorting the data log information with Microsoft Excel, is the most accurate method to "crunch" the data log and get VE table corrected for BLM averages between 126 ~ 130. The ECM will make corrections to the BLM. There is a limit on how much the ECM can correct for BLM's, so the closer the VE Table is corrected for the ideal 128 the better the overall drivability of the vehicle. Many of the adjustments posted above are calculated from values in the VE table. Basically when the VE table is adjusted correctly, the correct amount of Power Enrichment (added fuel) will be correctly calculated by the ECM.

I've learned that using Excel to "crunch" the data takes a considerable amount of the guess work out of tuning!

Dave where abouts in Washington are you? My tune seems to be going pretty good and I intend to get it on a dyno to get things dialed in some more.
I use this truck mostly for towing so I think fairing on the side of slightly rich would probably be a good idea.

But it might be useful to know where your located come summer time when I start towing the boat if I start having problems.
I make trips up to Morton Washington pretty regularly during the summer. I have a friend that has a cabin up there.

I live in Vancouver, WA. Real close to the I-205 / SR14 crossroads.

I think it would be a good idea to data log towing, to eliminate the guessing on the towing tune.

Ya I know where that's at I used to have a friend that lived right there also.

Towing just wont happen until the weather gets better. I'm sure you're having the same weather we are. I live in Hillsburito Oregon. My boat is winterized and put away. So I have nothing to tow until it starts getting warmer. I always had a problem getting up sylvan hill on highway 26 towing my boat. The previous stock motor gave up on me it probably had 5000 miles on it when it went. I rebuilt that and sold it and built this 383 to replace it. I'm hoping to at least get 350 hp out of this thing. I know it feels a heck of a lot stonger then my stock motor. Also pulls a lot harder then my Range Rover which is 330 hp but that's all just based on my butt dyno.

If you visit your local Craigslist, I have a post for TBI Chips.

I know the Hillsboro area well, I used to work at Ronler Acers. I don't miss the commute to Hillsboro at all!:D

another question for the tuner pro software I just grabbed the 42.xdf you had in the example. I have no idea what any of these files do. Can you explain what those files do. I assume something tells the tuner software which bits in the bin file go to what fields.

I'll hit you up on here if it comes to that. :waytogo:

I'm having pretty good success with who I am using. An alternate closer party is always good to know though.

I work at Jones Farm.

That's not a quick answer.

Basically the TunerPro .xdf is a definition file, set up for a specific make, model(s) and year(s) for an ECM part number. Some ECM's have several different .xdf file, depending on engine size 4 cylinder, V6 or V8 TBI / TPI and so forth. Typically the $42 .xdf is used for GM TBI light trucks 1987 ~ 1992 with ECM 1227747. Another way of looking at the $42 .xdf is as a Hexidemical Editor. The .xdf file will translate the Hexidemical code from the PROM chip into something that we can read. Basically the .xdf sets up the information (parameters) of the PROM chip so the parameters can be changed. Parmaters like injector flow, engine size, number of cylinder for the engine, when to turn on / off the EGR, engine idle speed, and several more parameter I did not list. There are parameters in the PROM chip that are set up in tables, like the VE Table and Spark Table.

The information in the PROM Chip is called a binary file, or .bin file. Basically the .bin file is loaded into TunerPro with the correct .xdf so the information in the chip can be modifed and saved. The modifed .bin file can then be burned into a chip.

The $42 .xdf is only 4K in size, very small compared to what is in an LS computer. The 1993 ~ 1995 TBI computer with an electronic automatic transmission is 512K in size.:doah: The $42 is a very good .xdf to learn with!

Went to the gas station asked for premium and dang attendant even repeated premium to me but stuck regular :( Got on the road and heard pinging looked at the ping count and saw a bunch of them. So headed straight home and now I need my tank pumped. Uggg.... you would think it wouldn't be hard to walk from a door to a pump and remember the gas someone wanted.

Many CK5 members might not know "Oregon State Law" Requires a Gas Station Attendant to Pump Gas! It is against Oregon State Law for the vehicle owner to pump their own GAS! Absolutely, no self serve gas stations allowed in OREGON anywhere, PERIOD!!

It's amazing how people in Oregon are totally incompetent and intellectually challenged that they can not learn to pump gas like the rest of the United states! :haha: It must be something in the water there... :haha:

Oh and in New Jersey too... my mother moved here a few years ago and came home furious that no one at 2 gas stations would come out and pump her gas... after I got off the floor from laughing so hard I was crying while she was kicking me I went and filled her car up for her... she said she wanted her oil and tires checked as well... then didn't give me a tip! :doah:

My first job at 15 was pumping gas in New Jersey... with no training!:woot:

I think originally it was a jobs issue and then got extended to facilitate the handicap people.

People argue that is raises our gas prices. However Washington right above us pays higher for gas and they have to pump their own.:doah:

The gas station pumped the gas out and gave me a full tank (30 gallons) of premium free of charge. They tried to get me to sign a waiver stating they wouldn't be responsible for any damge. No way I was signing that. Things seem to be ok so far though.

Better then draining the tank? How high is your compression ratio? Do you really need high octane? Or could you just back off timing a bit?

We have some stations here with 92 Non Ethanol. Not only great for old cars but has been recommended by all lawn mowers small equipment snow blowers and riding lawn mower shops. Every year I service my friend's riding snow blower, riding lawn mower etc..., fill tank with fuel and stabilizer, run engine with new fuel and oil. Just like I would in a boat for storage. But every year it gives trouble and need to clean fuel system and crud out of carb. But boat does OK? Small engine repair shops say boats and cars were built to handle Ethanol fuel long ago, small engines NOT! They are overwhelmed with work because of this.

Ethanol has a lower storage life, attracts moisture and does horrible things to materials not designed for it. Has less thermal energy so less HP. It is also made from corn and since it's now used in fuel has shorted the market of corn and raised food prices including meat! Fed by corn... using it in a daily driver on modern car has no issues, unless the car sits with half tank for a year... just did one of those and got half gallon of water off bottom of tank. Where fuel pickup is? Car would not run so I pulled a plug and it was wet... with water!!! Had to flush MPFI fuel system... car runs fine with no other repairs.

Last year it (riding snow blower) was stored with Non Ethanol and fuel stabilizer and runs like a top this year. It's the only fuel that has been used in all his equipment on property since we looked into this last year and nothing fails anymore after storage!

Sorry for the rant... back to topic...

Draining the tank is easy IMO just shove a tube down and pump it out. Compression ratio is 9.7:1 with aluminum heads. So ya I could back off the timing some and is probably what I will end up doing. But at this point I want to know what the motor can do. I want to get it on a dyno soon hopefully.

I always stick fuel stabilizer in the fuel when I store my boat. It does make a difference. My NSX sits for such long periods of times that I ended up sucking that gas out because it was so bad. You can't buy gas without ethanol here I don't think. They vary the amount of ethanol through out the year.
