My Front Dana 70 Build

Realistically, you can weld on any center section, but you're getting into techniques and skills that are out of my league. Pre-heating, filler material selection, and technique become extremely important.

I've heard from a less reputable source that D70 pumpkins are cast steel (like inner C's), which means they would be a snap to weld to, but I have no information to back that up. Your best bet to differentiate iron from steel would be a spark test.

I don't think it would be an issue. It wouldn't be seeing any odd forces.

Going to wrap the u-bolt around the axle tube?

we welded a huge truss on top of a d70 one time....no pre heat or anything and it bent the axle tube...after that we built a huge oven and pre heat axles to 400 then weld...no issues with that yet after 3 trusses were welded onto them...

Wes:

That's why the quotes were directed at you.
Ok, I see your point. But I'm still not convinced with a 9". Period. Thats why I'm saying to stand by the 60, 70 and 80 because a K5, 10, 20 and 30 weigh a lot more than a Jeep or any of those rock crawlers shown on the Hi9 website.
With more weight and power comes breakage on smaller stuff like the 9" axle. This, as my sig shows below, is obvious why everyone upgrades to bigger axles. Rockcrawlers like the custom built ones benefit more from 9" stuff as the weight is the big difference. That plus their drivetrains are totally different, too. Our big trucks don't run 4 and 6 cylinder motors, etc., etc.

So...... (whew!), I'm still sticking with and standing by a 60, 70 and 80 any day. No one could pay me enough to run a 9" unless I get to install it and break it for shiits and giggles. Then its going right back out to the scrap iron pile to be hauled off and cashed in at the scrap yards.

wtf is 4x4mecca?

when did that come around?

I think its odd that there needs to be 5 or 6 forums with alot of the same people on them.

[hijack]Branddon started it. Its got alot of specific easy to find tech. being that a member of ck5 started it, its not hard to believe that alot of the same members are there[/hijack off]

Clem, id like to see that thing fully assembled with ded's, the inners and all the other goodies:D

Oh geez, still beating a dead horse? :doah::rolleyes::D I give up. You win. While I can see you've been doing your homework on the 9", I'm just gonna have to bow out of the "comparison debate" and just stick with the good old GM stuff that I know about. I just don't have any desire, time or patience to read anything about the 9".

Now don't get me wrong, I have dreamed about building an F150 Ford of the '78 or '79 years and have already thought of the hi-pinion 9" rear to go under it. And yes, this is a Ford truck I'm talking about.

I guess the GM commercials said it best; "keep your GM all GM". I think that must be the philosophy I go by with my rigs. So maybe thats why I turn my cheek on the 9".

So, sorry to say, I'm still not gonna read up on any 9" axle unless I find my F150 for cheap enough and decide to build it. Then maybe, just maybe, I will come back and start digging into the 9" info.

Except of course for them Dana brand axles...
