My interior lights won't turn off

I was driving from Detroit back to Chicago and just after the sun sets my interior lights go on. I pulled into a gas station, pulled a fuse and the dome light went off, but the floor light stayed on. All I could do was block the light all the way home and disconnect the battery soon as I got back.

Now what could this be?

I was thinking it could be one of those buttons for the doors when you open and close it. My door light buttons stopped working a few months ago and now I think one might be stuck on. Does this make since? Should I look for something else?

P.S. do not drive a 20 year old K5 from Chicago to Scottsdale, AZ because you will be stranded in Texas for 3 days on your way back due to transmission issues.

I'd probably focus on the door jamb switches as well. You did make sure your headlight switch knob isn't turned so that the interior lights come on, right?

Believe me, I had plenty of time to play with that. I noticed the gages will adjust with the headlight knob, but the interior lights remain on no matter what.

Then likely not in the switch. :)

Door jamb switches can just be unscrewed, just be prepared for what they may look like on the back side. :(

The dome lights turn on when they get a ground connection. So if the door switch or any portion of the wire is shorting to the body this can cause them to come on. You've already figured out the short-term solution, which is to pull the bulbs.

I had the drivers side one break off and it would come on from time to time. Check and if so tape the ends off. ;)

NOW as for the driving thing.... I went 6,600 miles in mine back in June/July, 16 states and only problem was a bulb. Key to any trip is maintance and a good pre trip inspection.

Mine spend all it's life in Chicago and has never had any rest. Sounds like yours is in better shape than mine. Mine looks great, but still has 20 years of service.

Mine was a North Dakota State vehicle and it gets Brrrr F n cold there! But yea I have the maintenance records for it. The dam salt here in two years has started to kill it :(

X whatever of the door pin switches being grounded.

As far as road trips with the old iron my '81 Jimmy had been everywhere with almost no trouble at all. 5100 mile round trip to Round Rock TX and back...a month after getting rear ended hard by a drunk in a fullsized Ford (55 mph impact) 6 months later, 3600 mile round trip to San diego. Both the Cali trip and the TX trip the return was flat towing another K5.

Been as far north as Cold Lake Alberta, towed our 5000 lb 21 foot trailer close to 10,000 miles, Wa, Or, Id, Ut, Co, KS, OK, TX, CA all without major issues.

2 years? Try 20 years of salt. :doah:Now that's asking for it.

Not to mention one wreck and one theft last year. It's been a hard 11 months for it.

I will look at the doors when I'm not as mad at it.

Thanks for the advice guys!
