So this is my some what of a re build thread. I had originally started 8 years ago by doing a 3/4 swap. A year after that I striped the body down to bare metal and shot it with a coat of primer. Well next thing you know I find out I was gonna be a father so the build got put on hold. The K5 got put away for a few years and got to be in pretty poor shape after an out of state move and divorce. I was missing driving it pretty badly and was taking note of some of the build threads the guys were doing on here. So a few months ago I drug her out and started in on her. The rust was pretty bad and I about wore my ass out taking care of it. Anyways I'll put up a shot of her with the way she looked a few years back after she was primed and what she looked like a few months ago in piss poor shape.

Next to it here is the 94 K2500 that will donate the 6.5TD and NV4500.

I had to put the work on the outside on hold for a while due to the late rains this year so I turned my attention to the inside which was looking like **** to tell you the truth. Back when I stripped it down I stripped the floorboards as well. I put down a coat of POR-15. What a bunch of garbage that stuff was. My floorboards were rusted worse than before. So I had to strip all of the POR-15 and rust scale out of her. I then laid down a coat of Zero Rust followed by a good thick coat or Rustoleum. Future plans will be to go over it one more time with Herculiner as well as re doing the cargo area that was previously done in Herculiner.

So here are some before and after shots of the inside.

Getting the dash all ready for paint. My daughter loves big blue trucks so blue is the chosen color. It was my choice of color anyways, but I let her think she gets to pick. Hoping the winds die down in the next few days so I can shoot it.

So that's where I stand right now. Nothing fancy, but at least she is coming back to life. I do have to say that it was the build threads on here that kept it simple that really inspired me to get this project rolling again. Another kick in the ass was the fact that my girlfriend really gives me a lot of support. She has a 71 K5 that is in pretty good shape. So after mine is all painted and back on the road I'm gonna help her give her K5 a little TLC.

Oh yeah one other thing. One thing that had me really down on the old K5 was the fact that the last time it had tags put on it was 02'. So I went down to the DMV to see what the penalties were gonna be and low and behold the ex wife did a non-op on it.:thumb: All it will cost is $78 and proof of insurance. No smog either since I live in a non smog county. :waytogo:

Nice Corey. Glad to see things moving forward, and now I can watch. Looking good, but why didn't you just pull the headlight switch knob out? They are pretty easy to remove and would ensure you don't get paint on it. Just a thought.

Corey, looks good so far :waytogo:, so... a 6.5 stick conversion  that should be cool ! What shade of blue are you shooting on it? Keep up the good work !!!

Looking good brother!!

Let's hear more about this "zero rust"...is it like rust bullet? I have some areas of my floor that are a bit pitted like yours were, but still solid.

Come on Dude the tape was already in hand, and this is the cheapo paint job. Besides I have so much removed from her that I need to put back on already.

Hell if I know! Just blue I guess. :haha: Since this is project cheap ass paint job now I am gonna use the pre mixed Duplicolor automotive paint. That's right the stuff you get at the parts store. I am gonna shoot the inside first and if it turns out ok then I will do the rest of the truck with it. I figure fock it, it's not a show piece and will eventually get scratches anyways so why spend a lot on it anyways.

Never used Rust Bullet, so not sure how well it works. I went to the local paint store and explained to them what I had and they recommended I use the Zero Rust. They actually had other stuff there that cost more so I don't think it was a sales pitch. It went on nice and thick as compared to the POR-15 that seemed to go on thin. I really have no ideal how well it will work other than what they said, but I figure the prep work and 3 layers consisting of Zero Rust, Rustolium and Herculiner should keep the scale at bay. At least for a while.

Wow that floor looks good...I have been holding off on the inside of mine but that has inspired me to yank out the old carpet.

Just wondering because my son (3 1/2 year old) who refers to the K5 as his already, picked blue as well, which worked out well because I was already leaning towards it.

Forgot to ask; what T-case will you be running behind the 4500? round 205?

One last thing, I don't know if you have already bought it, but if not, I would ditch the Herc for the inside and go with AL's. I used Herc on a K5 I used to own and a CJ my brother had and was less then impressed to say the least. I took a chance and tried AL's Liner on my current project and the finshed product is night and day compared to the Herc. It's not too much more money either, just my $.02 :D

Where can you get Al's liner now? Blaze stopped selling that and went into another business. :doah:

I really like these kinds of build threads. Less of a "build" thread as much it is a "doing work on my truck" thread. I REALLY like the way the floors turned out!

IIRC Brian sold the business, I checked the website and it appears as though Triangle Specialty Coatings is still in business http://tscoating.com/, other wise check AL's directly http://www.alsliner.com/. I know I will be ordering a few more gallons for the K5 and the Willys.

That's the whole point of it. I have been missing driving my Blazer in a big way. After Rene got his 91 and was making a point of just getting on the road/trail I knew I had to do the same. Fock I just want to drive it down the road if nothing else.

I feel the same way. Right now I just want Krusty to move again. I will worry about building her later, if I ever really do.

Ok so today after work I painted the dash, inside of the doors, door jams and roof. The rest of the inside will be covered in the original plastic trim pieces that I am going to paint gray to match the seats that I plan on redoing, along with the topper.

Anyways here was today's work. I snapped the pics before I applied the clear coat. I took a chance and used Duplicolor paint. I got it at the local Kragen/O'Reilly's parts store. It comes all premixed and looks really good. It has a nice pearl to it, but not over done. I only had a quart that cost $25 so the inside was more of a test. I liked it good enough that I am going to do the rest of it with the same paint. Took pics with my cell so not the clearest in the world.

Thanks Jason. Just hope I do a decent job on the outside. Still a little more prep work but it's getting real close. Can't wait to paint the outside so I can put the new weather stripping in that's been sitting in a box for a few months.

Also what do you guys think of this ideal? I plan on painting the topper gray as mentioned before. I have also thought of doing the lower 8-10" of the body in a gray bed liner. I think it would go good with the top and defiantly give it the two tone look. Plus it would serve a purpose in protecting the body from rust and what not.
