I was dooin a lil hunting in my 83 k20 last nite and needed some 4 wheel action. As i was climbing i noticed a HORIBLE clunking noice every few seconds?? It did it in bolth 4 hi and low and sounded like it was coming from the front end?? has anyone elts ever came accross this or have any insite as to what it might b???:1zhelp: I seems to only CLUNK when climbing runs fine on flat ground

What are the specs on your rig? 203 tcase with a loose chain mabey? busted front axleshaft?

Would almost be willing to bet if it sounds like it's hitting on the front part of the cab that it's your t'case or shaft hitting the cab. My 78 used to do it when you put it under a load. I put 1" spacers between the crossmember and dropped mine down. My mounts were new but under a load it would flex just enough to tap the cab with the double cardon on the front shaft. If that isn't it I'd take a look at your motor mounts. They may be allowing the engine, tranny and t-case enough torque to hit. Hope this helps. Keep us posted as to what you find. Good luck brother.

Thanx for the advise EXTREAMETAHOE muchly appreciated! CHADDY: it is a np208 Tcase,700r4 and a 350 with 8" lift and rite now im running 255/70r16(vehichle inspection) but normally 37/14.5/15 toyo MT. The u joints appear to be fine no visual damage??? I am on a tight budget rite now so im getting really frusterated LOL

I had similar troubles with my M1008 and it was the CV-joint that was going apart
because the PO had not grinded it to survive the angle when lifted 6"

is your front driveline still secure? I had a 4 bolt flange work loose on me once, the driveline was hitting the crossmember under load. another thing that might be is the CV part of you driveline might be getting bad.

Has your front shaft been modded for the lift? CV may be clicking/popping while climbing (front axe would be extended more due to the weight transfer).

Check the clearance on the CV with that much lift. There are to tabs that need to be ground off, but if it is real close it may need some more under a load.
Is the transfer case lowered? mine had to be lowered several inch to make mine all work without binding.

It's not the chain jumping in your transfer case is it?

Martin

Had this with a 203, I would figure it could happen with any chain, it stretches then jumps the sprockets under heavy load, or a load. When mine went it sounded like it was coming from the front right hub. If the chain is jumping it can sound like the front end.

it just started happening outta nowhere so im thinkin it mite b the chain in my t case. ive wheeled the truck for a while with no problems at all and YES the front driveshaft has been modified. I also just did a 3/4 ton axle swap could that have changed anything???? Thanx fellas

:doah::haha:Since the shaft has been moded, I would put it in four low or high, lock the hubs and grab the driveshaft with both hands and see if you have any play at the CV. If everything is tight, could be the chain in the t- case... But with a recent axle swap, did you take the cover off the front axle and check the gears. If they were set up wrong or are different ratios it could very well be the teeth on the ring gear shearing off. My 14 bolt started like that with a little clunk and pop here and there. Had to keep wheeling and when I got on it hard, every tooth on the ring gear sheared off. Wasn't pretty at all. Just throwing some ideas out there. If everything looks good I'd deffinately pull the cover just to make sure. Better safe than sorry. Wish I would have....Instead I'm setting up gears next weekend. Keep us posted.... Oh and be sure to turn the truck off before you put it in gear and crawl under it........................ Not saying you won't but you would be surprised at some of the people I've met that would try it everytime....:haha::doah:

theres no excessive play in the driveshaft just the little bit u would expect(tooth to tooth) the gears r the same(410) and the rear(14bolt) was the only gears we played with and their setup rite(no whining)???????? must b the t case. F*CK!!! any input into t cases that will bolt up????

The easiest would be another 208, used one shouldn't cost that much, or you can replace the chain, as long as nothing else got screwed up.
