Hello,

So I think that my cat needs to be replaced. At Idle, there is quite a bit of rumbling and noise coming from the cat. Sounds like its broken apart and rattling away.

Question(s):

Since times are tough and I dont have enough money to throw at 'er right now, could I simply just continue to drive her the way it is with the Cat rattling?

Will (or could) I do any damage to the engine or any other part of the truck by continuing to drive it this way?

I plan to take a trip of about 500 miles, should I take it with the rig in this condition?

The truck isnt running bad and there are no "check engine" lights on.
True, I could take it off and break apart the crap inside but that would make it louder. I dont want it to be louder. I have till November until I need to get my tags.

As always, You input is GREATLY appreciated.

If money is an issue at the moment you should remove the CAT and gut it. It will not be any louder than it already is. Leaving the CAT rattling can lead to a plugged up CAT which will result in very poor engine performance and could even casue a fire because the CAT will get extremely HOT.

I just had one go bad on my tow rig (Ford). It lost power and just sounded horrible. If money is a issue right now just take it off and put a piece of pipe in.

agree'd, technically, it is against the law to gut a cat, but if its to avoid engine damage, i would support it, so long as purchasing a new cat later on is in the works. Putting in a strait pipe can lead to failed visual inspection, and also costs more than just ramming a pry bar through the cat material in the middle and "gutting" the cat. it basically turns it into a resonance chamber.

easy, cheap, and effective. just be sure to set aside money for the replacement.
