im looking to buy a m1008 cucv, The truck is pretty rust free except surface rust on the hood and some minor spot in the doorjam. i plan on having someone else repaint the entire truck in carc according to military specs. I dont know the knowlage to paint, but i probably can do the grunt work and get rid of the surface rust. How would i deal with surface rust on the hood? i know i gotta sand but what tools and grit? The spot in the door looks a little deeper than surface but no where near all the way through, is bondo easy to use and sand even? im thinking i can save money by sanding the rust away and just paying someone to paint instead of doing both.

Also, i noticed while looking at it it has a bunch of metal hooks/loops under the top of the bed on the sides of the truck. one every few inches mounted by 2 small screwed. Some of these are rusted and the rust has run onto the carc paint. I dont want to paint over these rusty hooks or leave them how they are. If i remove them im gonna have a bunch of little holes in the side of the truck. How can this be fixed? Can you use bondo in the little holes sand and paint over it? Otherwise i would try to salvage the hooks and paint them too but it doesnt look like thats possible. Any advice? I want this thing looking nice, authentic military. Thanks

I am in the process of stripping my hood. I'm using a 4" angle grinder with some 80 grit sanding discs. Its pretty aggressive and I have to be careful that I dont tear into the metal. I just kept it moving back and forth fairly quickly. I am also using a sander with 100 grit paper, but that is just for the light stuff. The angle grinder really gets after the surface rust that I had on the hood.

Never ever put bondo directly over rust, even if it's been ground down. The rust will just come back 10 times worse. If it truly is just surface rust, then use a wire wheel in a drill on it, then coat it with POR-15 or something similar. Then lightly sand with 180 grit, apply polyester glaze, then sand smooth and prime. If the metal is at all pitted, it should be cut out and replaced with new metal for the repair to last.

Yeah the rust made a hole like a millimeter deep, i didnt think id have to cut the metal if i sanded all the rust off down to fresh metal. Any other options? Is sanding the hood down and repainting a good idea or should i get a new hood? Thanks

also, what should i do about these metal hooks on the outside of the bed? If i remove them im going to have a bunch of little holes to deal with but right now alot of them look like rusty pos. Maybe i can wirewheel them and just paint over them when i have the truck painted? Or should i remove the hooks and just paint over the screws? Thanks

just saw this was replied to, i dont know a thing about sandblasting, and this is a kinda doing it in the diveway/street type of deal so. i figured id get an angle grnder or some type off sander and just go at it with coarse grit then sand smoth. then let the body shop take care of the remaining rust and paint. im just looking to save coin but i dont know much about body prep, like do i do it wet or dry? use anything special?

Do you have a compressor? If so you can do spot blasting fairly cheap with that lil portable one from HF. I used to be on a Nova site where a teenager used one for his subframe and it took him a long time but he got it finished. Me, I wouldn't have the patience for that.

There are also plenty of chemical converter/ removers on the market that may be what you are looking for.

I've been doing the same thing to mine. Mostly undercarriage, I've been using a 3M wheel and a angled drill to remove all the paint and rust. And then clean with mineral spirits, prime it and painting it with satin black. As far as the hooks, I dont know what they are used for. never owned a military blazer. If your not using the hooks, clean the rust and weld over the screw holes

cant weld, but i have access to a compressor, i can talk to the body shop about cleaning up the hooks or welding them over, id rather keep them but well see. I cant weld or paint or anything but i just figure sanding should be somewhat easy, and can save me some coin. i just need any tips and pointers for a 1st time sander, thanks

If someone has better info please step in: I would use a DA sander with 80 or so grit to clean up the hood, then clean the hood with mineral spirits and spray a couple of coats of primer on it. Just so it won't rust again until you get it to the shop. As far as the hooks, if you can take them off and clean the rust off. prime, and reinstall.

first, mineral spirits have no business in bodywork... denatured alcohol is all ya need..

rookies without a dual action sander can be adding work to the process if they don't know what their doing......

any questions, ask...

CARC paint was used starting in about 1986. I would suggest you get on sites like Olive-Drab and do a lil/lot of reading. Or search CARC paint removal. Make sure you have the proper safety equipment on that stuff.

yeah i know carc aint user friendly so ill need a resperator and such. i also know i can eff it up more than do good, so i guess i should ask if i should even attempt to sand it down? and if so, anyone got a crash course in what to use? how to use it and what to look out for? etc

hooks

i know this is real late but i was just looking around. your truck is a 1008 which they actually used for troop and supply transport. some of them had provisions for large canvas removable tops, which is probably what your hooks are for. a lot of them had wooden rails on the outside of the bed. the military blazers had rifle holders in the back.

Get a mig welder great for filling in holes. I filled in several on my bed where there was a toolbox mounted. Then get a sanding wheel for a grinder and blend the welds flush with the body easy to do.
