Hope someone can help me out here. First off, my membership won't let me try searching on this. 1990 3/4 ton Suburban 4x4, 350/th400. It started making a really disturbing noise tonight. It sounds vaguely like a squealing belt but lower & slightly metallic. It ONLY does this while in drive or reverse while at a standstill or barely creeping. No noise at all in P or N, noise goes away as soon as it starts moving. Just started tonight but I've barely had the truck a week now, and I need to drive it a hundred miles to work in a few hours:eek:

Are you sure it is the tranny?
I have heard similar noised from transfer cases.....but mainly when they are in 4LO.

I am not an expert on the auto trannys though, but there are a few guys on here that are.

Nope, not at all sure. I just know it only does it with the tranny in D or R. It does sound like it's coming from that area but it's real hard to tell from inside and with my wife not home yet to help there's no way I'm putting it in gear, putting the ebrake on, then stepping out to listen :eek1:

Ok turns out something was definately wrong. Got about a mile from home & the transmission died. Had to limp back in 4-lo at a crawl

do you have a Np208? if so that may be your problem. I was driving my old '85 blazer home a few years ago I went to give it a little more gas and the T-case kicked out on me....So I had to shut the truck of put it in park then put it in 4 low I started the truck back up and put it in drive I made it maby a mile before I said what the hell and took it out of 4 low and it ran just fine......to make a long story short I had to do this for about 6 months before the Np208 got to the point where I couldn't drive it by then my truck was so rusty I just junked it. My '86 K5's Np208 started acting funny but I got to it before it got really bad.....REBUILD......Now it acts like a new Np208. I have a feeling that Np208 don't like handling anything over stock HP/TQ.

Nope, I'm fairly sure it's an NP241. I had to use 4lo to get back 'cuz thats the only way I could get enough power to the wheels from the slipping tranny. 2/4hi got me nowhere.

ohhhhh dude that sucks hard....time for a new tranni.
