Blew the transfer case up in Penny. Closest I can find is one in Grand Junction and he wants $500 for one :haha::doah:

Anyone somewhere nearby with one? Needs to be a 95+ NP241C from a Chevy 1/2 or 3/4 ton

Does that mean we get wheeling pics soon ???

What are you breaking? I know some truck pull guys running 241s. I realize the stresses are different but dang man

This is Russ, the guy that annihilated a D60 doing a little pre-running. Some people are gifted.

My guess is he came down hard enough somehow to break the case.

If you need something, my brother is headed out there Thursday early am. I could get stuff to him.

I am a bit of a loss guys. The symptoms included hopping, a grinding noise which matched the tire revolutions and a steady screeching sound at speed. All the issues went away in 2wd with the hubs unlocked and I was able to drive it home at 65mph without any vibrations or unusual sounds.

Pulled the transfer case out and pulled it apart expecting to find it fragged inside like the other couple I wrecked and found next to nothing out of the ordinary. The chain gear on the front output was a bit sloppy on the splines and the crack in the case around the shift detent ball housing was a bit worse than it used to be but that was it. Nothing that would bump, grind or otherwise be in trouble.

Since I have a new case coming tomorrow afternoon and I had it all ripped apart anyways I decided to swap my SYE into the new housing to replace the cracked case half so I left the t-case out and in pieces for the night.

I then figured it had to be something in the front diff. I pulled the outers completely apart right down to the knuckles on both sides and found absolutely nothing wrong. Wheel bearings were properly preloaded and spun smoothly, filled with grease as they should be. Locking hubs move smoothly and show no signs of wear. Axle and driveshaft u-joints as well as the CV center balls are all smooth and tight. Spindle bearings for the axle shafts are good. Kingpins are tight, so is the steering, all the link mounts and all the suspension.

I found the front pinion is a bit loose, but nothing crazy. The gear set still turns smoothly and doesn't make any noise. I started ripping the front cover off and found the oil was a little bit dark and there is definitely some material on the magnets but nothing out of the ordinary. I need to go buy a 1/2" allan key to remove my steering ram to remove the cover all the way and inspect everything inside the front diff.

The rear diff turns freely on both sides, no unusual movement in the wheel bearings. Both lockers engage and disengage properly. My transmission fluid is a little dark, but it shifts fine and I have no problems in 2wd.

I almost hope I find the front gear set is fragged tomorrow, because I don't know what else it could possibly be? It was bad enough that I was certain I'd broken something quite serious.

Pinion is loose in and out?

My money is on fragged gears then

I had a guy bring an axle in and it turned smooth. No weird noises etc. But was doing all sorts of craziness under power. Several broken teeth. I am betting pinion lost teeth

Well, I got Penny all back together first thing this morning and went for a quick test drive. Wound up limping it home because the transfer case was howling like a banshee. Clearly the planetary ring gear is the wrong pitch and doesn't match the 29 spline input gear. They changed the pitch in 95. The case looked like a 94 down with the front output it had on it, but I figured it was worth a shot anyways. No joy!

So, she is on the trailer and I'm headed home tomorrow (which was the plan anyways). 20hrs of driving down here for 10 hours of wheeling, doh!! Now for 20hrs back home...

I am trying to decide if I am going to fix Penny or not. Her frame is finished (my doors don't open or close properly anymore), the tub is messed right up, the front suspension is garbage, the front axle housing needs to be replaced, the front gear set is now in need of repair and the t-case needs to be replaced again.

I have a stock 97 2 door kicking around that I could build next. Or I could build my 03 4 door. It's just as much work to repair Penny properly as compared to just starting with a new build...

I'm probably just going to sit on her for a while and decide later.

Check for fur on the front driveshaft. You may have wound up a coyote..............

Russel, I do have a '95 241C on the floor here, yours if you want it...

What is "buy"? :dunno:

Consider it yours. You've helped a ton, and will be over soon slaving over my wiring.

Did ya get my text this morning?

Text should be safe from roaming charges...hit me back when you power it back up.

If no one has said it, that tear in your rear quarter is totally badass :saweet:
