aight all.. ive had my truck as a stick for ever... every now and then.. dummy me goes to crank truck while standing on the ground and forget to check if its in gear. yeah old age memory loss.. hah..
plus my son wants to learn how to drive it and I want to make sure he doesn't go cranking truck with it in gear.

anyway... is this doable on a sm465?
what do I need?

There was a neutral safety switch factory that goes on the clutch pedal linkage on manual transmission models--it wont crank till you push the clutch all the way down..

didn't know that. ill have to look at my pedals... pedal is from a 1978... I don't have the wires so ill need to figure all of this out. hah

If it was an automatic previously it probably still has the NS switch on the colum and the wiring, you can tap into the wiring there to hook up the clutch pedal switch..

Finding a NS switch for a manual may prove challenging,I just tried looking one up on Rock Auto using several different years of square bodies and all they show are ones for an automatic transmission..might be a boneyard item,or you could rig up a push button switch that is normally open to the clutch pedal linkage..

truck was previously an automatic in 1989... went manual in 1992 LOL...
so somewhere in life I ended up putting a 1991 fullsize jimmy column and trans in due to hydro clutch stuff.. I don't recall any wires to trans for safety... so guessing wires didn't go there. there is a truck in the junkyard by me that someone took the manual trans and pedals out.. will hopefully go see if wires are still there...

The purple wire with white stripe is the starter solenoid wire. Interrupt it with a switch similar to the brake light switch

Ie normally closed. Switch closes on pedal down

The switch for this 79 is 14013141 and I was lucky enough to get a nos one on ebay. Very difficult to find.

Are they really? I took mine off the 77. Even saw it the other day

hook a brotha up.. also need wires too.. .LOL

The switch goes on the pedal assembly. You're on your own after that lol

It mounts to the pedal assembly and hooks into the pedal. Two wires, one yellow and one purple with blue stripe. Normally open switch that closes when the pedal is fully compressed. It looks exactly like this. This one is off my 80. marked "BETA" "14074333"

Searching "GM 14074333" returns multiple hits for a discontinued neutral safety switch and sold ebay listings.

Here is one available on ebay

If you want mine, shoot me an offer. Ill cut the connector off my harness and include it with the switch. My switch appears to be functional. Multimeter says it works. I found it under my bench seat cleaning out the truck.

I know on my '83 and '84 automatic trucks, the connector for the clutch safety switch is tucked under the dash with a bypass jumper. Should be able to remove the jumper and plug it in. :dunno:

As it's interrupting the feed to the starter, applying 12V to the purple wire in said connector is an excellent way to do things of questionable legality ... :ignore::ignore:

So i can cut a wire [when i figure out which] from starter.. and mount this between then? Sounds easy lol...

I cant figure out a pic how it mounts

I just looked. I have no hole on my clutch pedal so im definitely lost.. so if anyone has a pic. Idd apprec it

Yes, and it may be easier yet if your wiring is like mine. But even if not, your truck started with a neutral safety switch on the steering column. Though mechanically different, this is electrically identical to what you want on your clutch pedal. Attach those two wires to your clutch switch and you are good to go.

I can get you a picture of what hydro pedals look like, but I never remounted the switch after pulling it out of the donor truck. The switch mounts to the bracket, and the pedal bumps into it.

How about mounting a reed switch in line and use a magnet on the pedal? It wouldn’t be factory, but would be easy.

He could just plug in the NS from the automatic colum and just move the "collar" where the shifter went to park or neutral,to let it crank over--might even be a good anti-theft feature..
