3 new build actually, but ill give each its own thread.

this one is for a kid who is like a brother to me and his parents have treated me very well over the last 10 years, I used to even babysit this kid and his younger brother and sister.

He is working, has great grades, saving money and close to 16 and wants a 4x4 truck:bow:

so with some input from him his parents and I are going to do it.

requirements..decent mpg
safe
reliable or made relaible
cheap
buildabale into something awesome
and seats no more than 2

I would love to build him a chevy, but to be realistic it wont be friendly to his pocket book with gas prices.

His parents live in a HOA so I have offered up to build it, paint it and get it realiable and leak free:doah: being leak free is cant be a chevy:haha:

thoughts?

1.

inline 6 powered jeep comanche, great torque, realiable motor, parts are everywhere. Get a 5 speed, swap on a front clip from a 97-02 cherokee to give it a frsh look and a clean paint job. 5 inch lift and 33 inch muds.

2

toyota..reliable, pre ifs, 22r is a great motor. 4 inch lift, 33 inch tires, lots of aftermarket support to get him into wheeling, great gas mpg, boxed frame and easy to come by.

3 i

fs toyota..better styling, fuel injection easier to find on these years..but.. ifs front would suck if he takes a liking to wheeling:doah:

A yj jeep would be nice and easy too but they are really sold on the no passengers or liablity .

thoughts, pics, ideas?

my general plan was to go through and get the motor squared away, new alt, starter, head water pump, fuel pump, radiator, carb, clutch etc, and put in lifetime warrenty parts. then he can learn to work on things as they need repaired. or I oculd get him involved and teach him in the build up. the down side of getting him real involved in the maint and build stuff is that it will ake his mind off school . I know that from when I built my truck during high school

pics are up..a blazer of coarse

Stay away from IFS if hes even remotely thinking about wheeling.

The solid axle toyota is a good option. Look for an 85 most were solid axle and fuel injected. Btw whats the deal with the seating? I know a provisional license isnt suppose to have more than one passenger but do they not trust the kid that much?

I know plenty will argue against this, but its aplain fact that the more in the car..the more distracted you can be. I went out plenty when I was 16-17 seems when kids pile in a car the seat belt is a serious after thought. A kid driving does not need 3-4 passengers period, not to mention that really good chance the 15-16 year old kids parents often have no idea there kid is riding around in a friends car.

with more people in the car kids/people/boys often show off or feel the need to, 2 people being stupid in the back seat is an easy distraction while someone is still learning judgement on a left turn. ASK ME HOW I KNOW..

I vote for the yota. Get fuel injected even if its ifs and if he gets into wheelin' you guys can do a sas later.

well the 85's did have some that were fi and sas and if y0ou really look hard you can find an ex cab with both those features..then try finding a nice one..took my buddy mike a long time to find his.

I say the commanche pickup, There are tons of tricks to do to these, Parts popping up on ebay. It took my buddy a year but he got new control arms (short) RE drop brackets, coils shocks, pretty much everything you need would have cost near a grand new he bought it all for about 500, spring over in the back (commanches were spring under)

Also find a 8.8 axle with 4.10s re gear the front you got a nice ride. Or if you can find one that is a metric ton model they came with the good ol 44

the camanche build sounds fun, its a truck I have always wanted myself:D

with the spring over and a cheap lift up front untill he can do some arms it would be a hot ticket. put on the newer 97-02 cherokee front clip and some paint and it would be clean.. use some take off from the new rubicon to give it an updated look..build some bumpers/ sliders and call it a day:laugh:

I have had several small pickups a nissan a datsun toyota s-10 but my favorite BY FAR was my comanche even though it was 2wd. You can find a 2wd in realy good shape and they are the exact same thing as a 4wd but no x-case and a beam front axle. A screw in panel closes off the hole in the floor for the x-case shifter. I actualy bought a totaled 4wd comanche to swap over and make mine 4wd but never got around to it. Another cool part is if you have a 2wd comanche and buy a wreaked cherokee you can simply swap in the rear axle and have about 5.5" rear lift on LONG rear springs. One with a 4.0 is quick and fun to drive. A friend of mine had a 327 chevy in his.

Id would definatly vote for the comanche, they are just awesome little pickups.

A final note WOW I wish I did half as much as you do. Your always workin on projects and always building something COOL.

i vote toyota pre IFS. as stated before 85 is the best year to look at because of FI and straight axle. there are tons of companies who offer aftermarket parts for these, many things can be fabbed up for it.

the axles are good, the motors run forever, parts are cheap, no spring under to swap, no axles to swap, just make sure its a stick and not an auto, and no 3.0 V-6.

Toyota... 22r fi... I can't remember the actual name of the 22r that was fi, but you know what im talkin about, guess it was the 85 that people keep mentioning. I love my blazer, but my next project WILL be a yota, because they're fairly stout, good drivetrain (excludes the 3.slow), and are gettin pretty cheap to pick up

22-RE is the injected model, or you could always try to find a turbo 22RE

Comanche. They are reliable AND they have balls, unlike the yota. I also like the later front clip idea.

how about a dodge dakota?!?! you can pick up a standard cab cheap, there good on gas, only seat 3 ppl max, have a decent size bed for a compact pickup, some came with 318 small blocks, but most had V6's. they pretty much run forever, but they leak just like chevys! well i guess the dodge is out.... hahahaha

I think I might turn tail and build his a blazer,

he has liked all the blazers I have built and I know how to build one for cheap!

I think I sold his parents on the fact that if he go a blazer with bad gas milage it would keep him from joy riding all the time..he simply could not afford to:D

plus if he wrecks it..its should not be a total loss..wreck a toyota or a jeep.. and you stand a pretty good chance. I know I can find one running and they are easy to work on. I have a year to build this. the plan is a small block with a 4 speed and 205. swap some 3/4 tons rather than re-gearing. A cage, race seats and ill paint it..damn sound just like the 86 I did..
