Anybody know anything about this trans?

yep its the 6l80e and the 6l90e that come on I believe 07 and up pickups. Nobody to my knowledge offers an aftermarket controller for them yet.

Remington

I daily drive a 6l80e There is after market controllers for them. I know a little bit about them, what in particular are you looking to hear about?

Is it a hydramatic unit? I'm guessing so with the 6L80E designation.
Just wondered if it was a completely new trans or a outgrowth of an existing one.

It's a nice transmission. A guy here at work just went from from an '02 2500HD/6.0L/4L80 to a virtually identical '08/6.0L/6L80 version and pulls a larger camper all over the country. He really likes the new trans as the towing performance is better in the mountains both uphill and downhill because of more gears (he said it never shifted into 6th while towing...which is just a really high overdrive).

Empty it really helps fuel economy because combining the higher 6th gear overdrive and higher 3.73 axle it really drops the cruising rpm down, while still having more low-end grunt than a 4l80/4.10 axle truck.

Transmission gives you six forward gears (2.97, 2.31, 1.57, 1.18, 1.00, 0.75)

Looks like it has the same OD as a 4L80e, just has a few more gears between first and overdrive. The big upside of course is you can work with a much narrower rpm range to get the same job done.

Rene

Rene was talking about the TCI 6 speed which only has one OD gear.

BTW, to decode the trans numbers

6 = number of gears
L = longitudinal (the only application we care about).
90 = relative torque capacity (60<80<90)
E = electronic control

This applies to the 4L60/4L60E/4L80E/6L80E/6L90E etc.

How long are they? I know the 4L80E is longer than the 4L60 (aka 700R4).

Was going to ask where you came up with those numbers, then see you were referencing the TCI trans and not the actual 6L80E.

Most 2500HD trucks with the 4L80E had 4.10 axles combined with the 0.75 overdrive give a final drive ratio of 3.08:1. On the 6L80 trucks 3.73 seems more common so combined with the 0.67 OD it drops the final drive ratio down to 2.5:1, yet 5th gear w/ 3.73's is still slightly lower than overall then 4.10's and the 4L80 OD.......guess what I am saying is that I would love to replace my truck with one that had the 6L80 since it spends 95% of it's time running empty on the highway, and when towing the just slightly lower 5th gear ratio would work great.

who makes the controller for them? Last I heard there was a company working on developing a stand alone controller, but hadnt heard anything since then.

I believe I have seen speartech have a controller out. http://www.speartech.com/ If you click the link they have a write up for a install.

Here is a copy and paste job off the website

The overall length of the 6L80 transmission is actually SHORTER than the 4L60E! We had to use a longer driveshaft for this project. The 6L90 is 35mm longer than the 6L80 due to the thicker gears, etc.

My only concern is will it fit under our cabs correctly?

Shoot, $1200 doesn't sound bad. You'd pay that for a 700R4 from BTO...

...not that I have $1200 plus at least several hundred for the controller. :doah:

At work half our fleet are the OBS with the 6.0 and the 4l80e with 4.10s and the other half are NBS with the 6.0, 6l90e and 3.73s, and honestly, the older ones 'feel' nicer and tow better. I swear everytime I tow something with one of the new ones it seems like its ALWAYS shifting. Also the new ones the tow/haul mode seems to have no effect, whereas the older ones it will hold the gears out longer so that it doesnt shift constantly.
