New here...Pre-Build Info getter thread

ok cool...just wanna be sure so i can beef up the shafts. I have a friend that has a machine shop so it wouldn't be too bad for getting the knuckles cut if they weren't but looks like you're right :) less work for me

oh and it is an 8 lug, but does the HD just signify it being 3/4 ton over 1/2?

didnt read all the other posts, so if its been said......

Dont dick with upgrading the shafts. Just get a 60. Unless you just plan on doing really light wheeling, and pavement pounding.

May aswell save the money youre gonna spend on shafts, and poke it away for a 60...

if i could find a 60 built in good shape with knuckles that were ready for high steer, i would, i just don't wanna pay an arm and a leg for another axle at this time. maybe i already broke an axle and just don't know it.

this is gonna sound retarded, but does anyone have the shift pattern for the np208 gear shifter? that sounds dumb, but there's nothing on the top of mine and this is the first one i've owned. if it's like any other gear box, i have a pretty good idea as to where everything is, but i'd like the reasurance. Thanks

so i am thinking about my brake and steering this evening and came up with a list of parts that I'm looking at getting. (not too sure if all of this is necessary, but would give me a warm fuzzy with new/reman'd parts)

Starting with the Brakes, this is what i'm planning as of now.
- DIY4X Brackets
- 77 K20 Calipers/Rotors/Pads
- ORD's Rear Brake line Kit (could just build them, but whatever)
- Probably gonna replace the brake booster and master cylinder
(Does anyone know if i can upgrade to a bigger MC without firewall/booster mods if so, i'm all ears)

For now with the Steering, i'll probably get a new power-steering pump (i'm going to eventually go hydro-assist, so wondering if there's a specific one i should get) New steering box more than likely if i actually broke something in there (doesn't turn full lock in one direction even at speed) I'm going swap in the XJ steering shaft.

I'm going to stop at that for the steering until i get the suspension completed so i can measure for the tie-rod and draglinks.

Honestly could use some insight on this cause i don't want to miss anything halfway thru doing this. (i'm writing a to do list in a database file and ordering the parts about a week before i get back to the states, so i want to have all this ironed out.

Thanks in advance.

Jack

One thing to consider pertaining to your steering box, you had mentioned going to crossover, this will reqiure either a 2wd steering box or at least the sector shaft from a 2wd box. Plus don't forget, to do the Jeep steering shaft you must use an 80 something and up box (splines were different then the 70's box's IIRC).
As far as the PS pump, most guys will simply "mod" a good pump to boost flow and seem to have good luck with the hydro assist. If you search, there are some good threads on the pump mod.
You could always go all out an just buy a whole setup from PSC or another shop and be done with it but that depends alot on your budget. :D

I'm assuming (and hopefully not too much) that these 4x2 steering boxes can be found online by sellers already modded, but if not, i'm not too worried, i tapped a box for my Toyota and it worked fine.

I'll have to take a look at the pump mod...i know i'll probably need a bigger power steering fluid resevior which i have a spare in my garage i welded together for my yota. I would rather do that on the cheap...PSC is nice and i've seen their kits in action, but i think i can build something close to it's performace with a little will-power.

Thanks for the input JT

The 2wd box will bolt right up to your frame, the difference is the pitman arm can be installed lining up front to back instead of left to right (if that makes sense ) . As far as tapping the box for hydro lines, DIY4X makes a really slick end cap, and you can tap into the top of the upper cover plate for your other hose.

Here is some good reading http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=159921&highlight=hydro+assist+cheap

Yeah i read thru all of that and but just now saw the pump mod...looks easy enough.

You know of a quick way or any way period to find out if my pump is working correctly?

Also i always hated the stock steering...stupid J-arm steering setup with 400 differant link points just makes it sloppy even the 2 piece stock Tie Rod that is just screaming to twist apart...that's why i want to go to hi-steer. you think with the setup i'm looking at i'll need a dropped pitman arm or a flat one? (from my experience, flat pitman arms just allow for more clearance of the drag link right? is that a known problem with chevies?)

ok...i'm looking on ORD website and looking at the d44 and 10bolt Corp Crossover steering page:
http://www.offroaddesign.com/catalog/Dana44crossover.htm

and there are 2 kits...1 is for crossover steering and the other one is for the HighSteer...this may sound like a dumb question, but is there a differance between the terms or is it just differant terminoligy for the same steering setup?

Yes there is a difference. The crossover kit is just that, it converts your factory push pull set up to crossover. The high steer raises the tie rod much higher and out of harms way. I'll look for a picture for you ;)

Bingo :D, so the highsteer kit will have most of the same components as the crossover but with an additional steering arm for the driver side to remount the tie rod up high.

so crossover steering uses the stock tie rod but the draglink connects higher on the passenger side steering arm?

Yes and no :D. Yes crossover uses the stock tie rod, but stock there is only a steering arm on the driver side. On a d44 you will either have to source a flat top knuckle and have it machined and then have studs added to mount a steering arm. Or pony up the money and go with an aftermarket knuckle.

i guess i just need a pic of the crossover...here's the high steer i put up on my yota that i turned from an IFS front end to SFA

scroll up to the axle pics...i already have both flat-tops ;) so all i need is steering arms a 4x2 steering box?

did a quick search on the crossover...now is this a high steer arm, crossover steering arm or is it the same thing?
ce22.jpg

cause it looks like a high steer arm and they cut off the original tie-rod mount off the knuckle

Yep, that is a high steer and crossover set up, and they did cut off the old mount on the knuckle. The crossover only will mount similar to that but the steering arm will be different between just a crossover vs. a crossover high steer (will have an extra hole for the tie rod to mount into and may be a bit longer, not sure)

just found this article...i think i gotter figured out
http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=249038

Looks like crossover knuckles use the original bottom hole on the knuckle for the tie rod and the top hole (where the new arm would be installed) is for the drag link) man there's a lot of steering options LOL

btw...the picture above is on a jeep, but same concept...still a d44 just not an HD

that is correct

Welcome to CK5!

Shift pattern for the NP 208 (and 241)

All the way forward toward the dash is 2HI, pull back one notch is 4HI. Directly back from that is N, then the shifter needs to be pushed over laterally and pulled all the way back for 4LO.

Low range is 2.61:1.

The only real drawback to the 208 aside from the aluminum case is the lack of a SYE kit for it.
