New water temp gauge??

Just installed new mechanical Water temp gauge.(had electric)
Warmed truck up and temp keeps going past 220...I have a 180 thermostat..
How can I check if its the gauge or if I screwed something up??
The old gauge used to sit at 180...??

1)make sure your line isnt touching the exhaust or any other part that might affect the probe...
2) confirm its in the right place in the block and the probe isnt touching

I use a thermometer made for radiators... the zone might have one you can borrow... that would confirm temperatures
