Hey all, I'm the proud new owner of a 1990 3/4 ton 'burb. So of course I have dozens of newbie questions, but I'll restrain myself to just a couple here. I've only got the basic membership so my searching is pretty limited.

First off, can someone clue me in on my drivetrain here? 1990 3/4 ton 4x4, I know I've got a 350 TBI, TH400, & 14bSF, what front axle & TC came with this truck? The front looks like a 10-bolt but that seems kind of small to be under a 3/4 ton, there's a number plate on the TC but it's pretty much unreadable.

Also, my tailgate window is kaput, I can hear the motor run but the window only goes down a couple of inches then stops. Sometimes goes up with the switch, sometimes not. I can push it up & down fairly easily. I'm guessing it either needs a new window regulator or maybe the motor gearset, can anyone point me to where I can find these other than the local pull-a-part? The outside keyswitch doesn't work either way, do I have to take all the window guts out to get to it? Thanx for any help y'all can offer.

Welcome to the board!

The front axle is a ten bolt and the t-case should be a np241. As for the rear window on the tailgate their is a panel that is just screwed on, you should come right off and you should be able to get at the motor and wiring.

Post up some pics and show off your new rig

Thanx for the drivetrain info. I've already got the back panel off, there's something near the motor that just spins & clicks when I run the window motor. I can't see any way to get to the key switch, looks like it's blocked by the window gear. Just wanted to see if there's some trick to getting to it before I pull the tailgate guts out prematurely. Of course I'll have to do that to replace the regulator anyway i guess. The site won't let me post pix yet, but if it lives up to reputation & the other fine forums for my other garage toys I'll be plunking my $25 down eventually :D

you can get around the pic thing by just hosting your pics somewhere else. i prefer this method because everyone can see them.

Welcome to CK5!

You'll learn a lot by reading the forums...it can feel a lot like drinking from a firehose initially. There's a lot of information here.

Check the year-specific forums too, it does seem like questions about power windows and tailgates come up a lot so that one should be easy to solve.

Searching is a great way to make friends here. Nobody likes a guy who asks for help without at least trying to solve his own problem with a little searching... having some background about previous posts will help you ask better questions and get better answers too. As you will see soon enough, the $25 membership is money well-spent. There are a LOT of guys here willing to help you for free, and the amount of money you can potentially save by troubleshooting and fixing problems yourself is enormous.

On the flip side, being around a bunch of enthusiasts can also cause you to SPEND a lot of money on upgrades and improvements...bigger tires, better axles, etc. :doah:

Well I always try to go for the search first, but until I upgrade my membership it wont let me. Now it turns up I've got a leak somewhere around the brake MC/ABS block, and I'm sure that'd be easy to find some leads with a search, but...

for your window, undo the cable that spins from the electric motor to the regulator and chuck it up in a low voltage drill

use taht to get the window up then you can get at the internals. grease it up and check the tracks on the sides,

WHATEVER YOU DO, DONT PULL ON THE WINDOW WITH VICEGRIPS OUT OF FRUSTRATION,

Welcome!

I also have a '90 3/4 ton burb (check my sig. for specs).

In addition to having the 10 bolt front, you should know that the front axles have 30 splines instead of the 28 splines found on earlier models.

And ditto on ponying up the $25 (I just renewed my membership today). The benefits are endless!!

Had the tailgate window problem myself. The problem probably lies in the motor, switch, and wiring. All 3 had to be replaced on my truck. Along with the entire tailgate since it was rusted and cracked in like 5 places.

My key switch worked when I bought the truck, then it worked one direction when I got the new tailgate, and now it doesn't work at all. I haven't even bothered checking out why.

Makes me want to buy a hand crank window, much less problems...
