My high performance diesels I always ran a zinc additive in. They were flat tappets. I pulled a cam out on one and after 12k miles the lobes were flaking. Started adding zinc and never another issue. But to other points here, these had higher lifts and higher spring pressures.
Actually water from condensation and small amounts of coolant getting in the oil cause sludge more than fuel contamination, combined with short trips or frigid weather conditions where the engine barely gets up to operating temperature long enough to boil off the moisture..
But carbed engines will dilute the oil much faster ,especially in cold weather when the choke stays closed longer..usually fuel tends to wash oil off things, its a solvent, and the resulting lack of lubricity is what does the most damage..
Some engines are just prone to making sludge due to faulty design too..some interesting reading here.. Motor Oil Sludge
Wonder if anyone uses this Sta-Lube motor oil that supposedly is good for 15 years or 150,000 miles....
