No c-clips? Thought there were

Hi all I changing the hubs and u-joint on a 10 8lug axle picked up a few weeks ago. I thought there was a C-clip retaining the axle shaft?

Also Im wondering if I should change the ball joints. They dont look bad but the u-joint had so much slop and Im unsure how long they have been sitting, im wondering how bad they are?

C-clips are only in the rears, not the fronts.

Grab the knuckles and wiggle them up and down. If theres play, replace the ball joints. If theres no play, leave them alone.
If the hubs/rotors are still on, put on a tire/rim and then wiggle them up and down as it will be easier to check for play in the joints.
