Now this is what i need when camping

I ask about the rarity of the 400 BBC because I almost bought a blazer with one. At that time I did a little research and came up with: when someone refers to their engine as a 400 BBC I take it to mean the 396 only in production for two years in the early '70s. And that particular version of the "400" BBC would be pretty rare I would imagine.

But their not. And the problem also lies in the fact a .030 bored out 396 nets 402. So alot of 396 blocks are now 402.
But as a casting number 402. Not that rare, and not necessarily super desirable either. Not alot of guys building concourse restoration builds with these.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong here but cars still got the 396 and only trucks got the "400 BBC"

Then add to the LS craze.... And the fact a 454 looks the same as a 402... Most building semi original/resto mod trucks are going to to build the 454(or bigger) big block and slapp 396/402 stickers/emblem on....

Both the 396 and 402 which like beags said is a bored over 396 were not rare.
I have one in my 70 c10 now.
The trucks with the option were not many but not rare by any means.

I've read GM made the 402 out of 396's that had cylinder bore issues on the production line--rather than just scrap them, they bored them oversize to a 402 cubic inch...they made lots of them from 1971 to 72,Chevelles often got them, and Impala's..

I've often wondered why Gm didn't offer a BBC in a Blazer, seeing one will bolt in and they did put them in pickups (2WD)..

A guy I used to see at a swap meet that sold auto brochures and ads of old vehicles had a sweet 1966 GMC C-30 factory camper similar to that,it had a factory 427 tall block in it with a SM420 4 speed..he told me he was planning to stop selling his stuff and "retire" and he'd sell the camper for $5000...I was tempted!..

big block, low range, and 10 bolt diffs...not a good recipe if you're offering a warranty like GM would have been. Not much of a mystery why the Blazer, or any half ton 4x4 never got the big block.

Sounds reasonable--I guess they figured we'd just tear the trucks up with a BBC in them ,then try and get it repaired under warranty..

They put 400 small blocks in K5's factory too, which were almost equal in HP and torque as the smog years of the 454's in the mid 70's..:dunno:..
GM should have offered a FF or Eaton rear diff instead of the 10 or 12 bolt 1/2 ton ones with the larger engines..

Not after some headers, 3/4 race cam, a 750DP and a torker intake:burnout:
