I have had my 87 k5 on the road for about four months, and I cannot figure out how to fix this problem. When I come to a sudden stop my tranfser case makes a funny buzzing noise, and goes into neutral, the only way I can get it back in 2hi is to slam the lever all the way down to 4lo and back up to 2hi. I've lengthened the linkage as far as it will go but nothing happens. Also even when the truck is in 2hi the lever seems to slightly pull itself down a hair. The truck has a 4 inch suspension lift but I wouldnt think that would affect any linkage issues.

The lift wont affect anything, but a body lift will. If you have already messed with the linkage, both extending and contracting AND cleaning, then I would have to point to the inside. Might be a shift fork or fork pads are worn. Most likely, they have never been serviced. Go through it, or have someone do it and replace what is necessary plus seals and the chain.

i had one do this .

found it blown up inside . when I drained the fluid to check stuff I had bearings come out of it with the oil.

Time to rebuild the transfer case. The first time it happened to me I was kind of confused why the truck wouldn't move. I was at a busy stoplight looking underneath to see if the driveshaft fell off. When I tore the case apart I found that the ears on the mode fork were pretty much gone. On decel, the inertia of the heavy parts makes them slide forward just like pulling the level to "N". The teflon pads can only last so long, then you start wearing metal. Fortunately, the forks seem a lot softer than the parts they ride on - they were perfect in mine with the mode fork almost gone and the range fork heavily worn.

I would order a basic T-case rebuild kit, a set of forks and the pads. Then tear it down to see if it needs anything else.

Having the shift linkage misadjusted makes things wear a lot faster, so make sure you get it adjusted right when you're done. A body lift will affect it.

you can buy a new fork from a trans shop and if your good at taking things apart you can fix it your self i did mine and it works great
the fork has nylon caps that ride in the groove on the range selector and they wear out if there is not enough oil and then the cast fork it self wears out fast
so when you stop the range ring slides into neutral
very common on 208s
