Hey Folks-

I have an NP203 w/ a part-time kit installed. Started making noises, and took it to the tranny shop. Said it's going out, noise is the sound of it slipping into 4wd. Shifter is shot too. So, here are my options:
  • Pull it out, get a rebuild kit and rebuild it myself. Never done this before, wouldn't know where to start. Not sure on cost.
  • Get a used NP203. $300?
  • Get a 205- tranny guy said this is expensive because I have to get new drivelines.
  • Have tranny guy rebuild it- said it could run me "worst case" $1,000.

First there is a chance nothing is wrong and rods need adjusting.
If not, the rebuild isn't that hard you just need to know that holding the rollers on the shaft is easy if you use sticky grease.
You should be able to find a used for less than $300.
I might be going to your area soon, I can help you or do it for you for a couple bills.

A transfer case is not that hard to rebuild. You can replace every single replaceable part in there for less than your $300 figure. But instead, pull it apart and see what's wrong. Replace only the broken or worn items. Post pictures on CK5 and we'll help you through it.

A 203 is a heavy, gas-guzzling, tire wearing monster, but with the part time kit you've already eliminated 2 of the 3 problems. A 205 is stronger, the 208 and 241 are lighter with better low range, but getting new drivelines is expensive. Just rebuild it and roll on.

I would not pay a shop $1k to rebuild a 'case. It's worth probably a few bills if you tear it out and take it to them.
