np205 speedo grommet / o-ring

Had the typical leak out the speedo cable off my np205. I bought the o-ring which folks pointed to in many other posts. My pic gallery shows either I’m doing this wrong or it doesn’t fit without coercion... it doesn’t seem to have had one prior. Before I splurge for the entire $50-$60 sleeve part, I decided to try going to Lowe’s.

I tried just putting in a grommet as shown. The fitment is perfect but not sure how long that grommet will last / do the job of keeping a decent seal.

I’m changing the 80w90 gear oil in the case while I’m at it. I’m not sure what the old oil is supposed to look like but it seems to have a rusty look to it.

Thoughts on this?

I’ll try that part. The grommet was a nice try but I’m sure it lacks making a good seal.

I just got one of these seals from NAPA after doing a lot of research, because I get annoyed when websites figure this out and use their own part # and jack up the price, hiding the information. Thought I'd post the actual part numbers here for posterity:
