More questions from me, I have alot sorry.

My 1990 k5 has an np205 swapped in. The speedometer etc of course doesnt work. The truck drives but dies sometimes when coming to a stop, very randomly.

I have been lurking and searching for the solution to this problem.
Has anyone successfully used one of the VSS from Jagsthatrun.com to make this work? Most solutions or threads just kind of trailed off or were vague about part numbers/kits.

I cant recall which would theoretically work, #2 or #3 but I can research that out. Here are the VSS I am referring to.

Im pretty sure it will work only if the chip in the computer is reprogrammed. Dont quote me on that tho.

#1 looks identical to the one I used on my swap from an 89 k5 with TBI. I use it to run an autometer electric speedo and the ECM. Not sure if it'll power your speedo though.

I'll have to check their website and see if it mentions re flashing or not. I don't recall reading that but will see what I can find out.

Bp71k5- as long as I could get vss for the computer I'm fine with stock gauges not working.
I wonder though, lets say I got it all working with a aftermarket speedometer, would my odometer still not work? I'm guessing not since it works off the factory speedometer (at least that is my understanding...)

Just get a speedometer with odometer built in.

Well I mean the original one to tell how many miles are on the truck hasn't worked since
the previous owner did the 205 swap however long ago.
I guess that doesn't really matter now though...

If it were me, I'd be researching how to get the reluctor on the 205.

The setups exist, it was stock for '90-91 one tons (our body style, I'm running one) so either find the parts to make yours that, or find out if anything else can be made to work, IE 241 reluctor, etc. Probably not, since you need the specific VSS/205 output housing.

FWIW, JTR is pretty clueless when it comes to 4WD/these trucks, their info is pretty much all wrong when it comes to our setups.

Stalling on decel is a classic symptom of missing VSS input.

I've been considering that option as well if the above didn't pan out.
I saw this thread elsewhere and it seems like a fix.

I'd just about pay someone to set that tailend up. I am mechanically enclined but I just don't have a good spot to pull a transfer case right now.

You really shouldn't have to pay that much for the VSS stuff for a 205, realistically how many people NEED the 40 tooth reluctor setup? Not many. They are rare, so are Yugo's. It doesn't mean they are worth what some people might ask for them. Eventually one will come up reasonably priced, even if its the whole case. They are easy to swap even under the truck.

The other option is to ditch the 205, and go with a '90-91 241. A 241 with the short SYE kit (yes, money, but so is the VSS 205) will make driveline angles better, get you a better low range, and a case that is rated for more input torque, not to mention fit in the truck as it was supposed to...ie, the shifter works and fits right.

I'm really leaning towards the 241/SYE setup myself, and I'm already running the VSS 205. :)

Im not familiar with the newer year trucks, but i assume yours has an electronic speedo?...if so check out pirate4x4...theres many write ups about converting mech. speedo 205's to electronic vss 205's...i just installed a vss 205 into my '85 and had to go from vss signal back to mech. to operate the speedo

I'll do that!

just want to make sure i have this straight.

if i can find a 3/4 ton 90-91 truck with an np205 it should have an electrical speedometer setup that i can either swap the whole thing into my truck or scavenge parts from OR get a 241 tailhousing and convert it to work with the 205 as in this article:

http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f221/installing-vss-on-a-np205-460060/

ill be honest, i dont have the tools to do the 241 conversion in that article. just a bit too much for me. I live in a small town and i dont know what machine shops would even be around here either. If i swapped back to the 241 case i would probably need a new driveshaft, correct?

this truck is a bit of a daily driver but i more or less drive it once or twice a week and its not anything i HAVE to do and i do drive 2 miles or something maybe. its not something im building for major offroad usage but I want it to be capable if needed.

doing another google search i found a good article on pirate about this.
One fellow insisted the jagsthatrun senders will work but you have to "get rid of the drac" or basically have one wire to ground the other to the ECM itself.

Now I havent read much on the DRAC system, I havent gotten that far. Would i actually have to remove the DRAC or just bypass it for this to work?

Here is the link to the pirate4x4 thread:

edit #3, im not worried about cruise control. mostly just getting "abs", and vss working so it doesnt cut out when stopping.
