NP208 Fluid Capacity, Bone to pick...

Everyone says the thing takes 4-5 quarts. So I put 5 quarts in and now my brand new seal on my front output is leaking.

My dad suspects that I have too much fluid in it which is putting too much pressure on the seal.

I've had two separate trans guys tell me the thing is full at 3 quarts but what ever happened to the "Its full when it comes out of the fill plug".

The case is clocked up one notch which I figured would take pressure off the seal since its out of the fluid level more. I dont get this how much damn fluid does the factory manual say?
 
when the fluid is at about 1-inch below the fill plug hole, that is full. If you fill it to the top of the plug hole, it will sling oil out the seals until it is at the correct level.
 
They all leak whether it is overfilled or underfilled . I could never , ever , totally stop the K5 from slinging a little oil on the underside of the bedfloor .

Which I suspect is why they started putting the double seals with the regular seal on the inside , and a bellows that seals to the slip part of the yoke on the later 241's like the one in the 93 pickup I have .

:doah: I missed the front part , and it was right in front of me . Cut me some slack , I have a pregnant lady ruining my sleep :laugh:
 
Your probably leaking from both the front pinion seal and the rear (if not, it will soon). If you look at the transfer case rear pinion seal, you will see that the lowest piont of that seal is located about 1-inch lower than the fill plug. Thus, if you fill the transfer case right up to the top of the fill plug, it will start slinging gear oil out of the seals until it reaches the proper level, which is the lowest piont of the lowest seal.
 
pauly, you'll get more sleep in the next few months than you will for the next few years.... get used to it! =)

My old tcase did this when it was 5qts filled. This is the only gear driven static fluid level piece of drivetrain (ie axle/diff/trans/tcase) thats ever not suppose to be filled to the fill plug. Is it possible that over filled it has blown my front seal?

I really doubt that seeing as how, as I said the tcase was fine with 5qts in it before it was remmand...

Idk I'm very unhappy that I spent $1000 and the stuff is leaking, ALOT. I'm wrapping up loose ends so the truck is drivable and I can tell the guy its coming to his shop so he can fix it on his time and his dollar.

I'm refilling my T-case and was surfing on 208 capacity when this thread came up. I automatically assumed I should fill until it was at the level of the fill hole. Is that not right? I've dumped about 4.5 qts in it so far. I think it's close, but not pouring out yet. The case is vented, so it's hard to believe the seals would "blow out", but if they aren't intended to be below fluid level all the time, that's good to know too.
 
Ive always filled mine until it comes out of the fill. Ive replaced the front output seal before because it was cracked. Its never leaked by it since.


You are correct, it is a vented case, if it builds pressure, it has somewhere to go, unless the vent is clogged.

I picked 1988 because if there was a problem prior, normally they fixed it later on.

I'd check a few years just to be certain there wasn't a misprint in 1988, so something between 1981 and 1988 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=545416

Of course, never a guarantee that GM wasn't wrong, but I wouldn't think so for that many years.
 
1 pint Lucas oil stabilizer, 2 guarts trans fluid. Only problem I have ever had was when I broke the output snout off going off of a drop off.:doah:

So, nowhere near coming out the filler hole? How did you arrive at the 2 quart value?

Ive always filled mine till it comes out the plug. Never had a front output leak unless the seal was bad.

I did look at a manual once and it seems like it called for something in the 2-3 quart range but I don't really remember. I was always taught that if it doesn't have a dipstick fill it till it runs out the fill hole a little.
