How do you get the speedo gear assembly out of the "cone" on a NP208? I have the cone completely off but I can't seem to figure it out. It has raised places on it like you should tap it with a screwdriver or something, but I tapped it 180 degrees with no effect. Do I just bang it out from the inside?

Dude, I swear our builds are on the same wavelength. I literally just swapped speedo gears and rebuilt my 208 last week. If you get the cone off, the drive gear is splined and literally just slides off.

Woops, just realized you may be talking about the driven gear. It has a metal clip (obvious) holding it in and just an o-ring seal. I had to use channel locks on the raised surfaces and the old twist-pull-method. Maybe try pushing from the inside. But nothing fancy. Just an o-ring.

That's what I needed to know, thanks. Did you have to replace the o-ring? If so, where'd you find one?

I had to install a new Speedo housing since I was going to a 40 tooth and stock housing was for 30-something tooth gears. New housing came with one. You could probably pick one up locally though. Or put some thick grease on your old one. Should seal for awhile. Maybe forever.

The o-ring looked okay. I ended up tapping it out from the inside.

Next dumb question: how does the breather tube install? I tired to tap it in, and to just force it in while twisting back and forth. Seems like I was just shaving away aluminum. :dunno:

ummmm. I didn't take mine out. I washed it out with some brake cleaner and put the hose back on. Mine spun freely so I imagine it's just flared from the inside...witch would make it a pain to reinstall. Maybe tap the hole and put an NPT nipple in it? That might be the route I'd go. Plus probably more water-tight.

Also, if your output cone is still off, it's better to put the driven gear in after the cone is bolted up. So you don't put the plastic gears in a bind while installing the cone.
