NV4500 Failure this AM

Carnage pics

Input shaft failure confirmed. There was only about 1qt of fluid left in the box. My bad for letting it go. Now why all the fluid leaked out is another question... The input bearing siezed causing the gears to strip.

I'm 99% positive I'll rebuild it myself. Seems fairly easy provided I can get a few specialty tools and access to a press.

From my brief visual and talking with Transmission Exhange co. in Portland it's a 2-piece. Looks like 4th gear on the countershaft is replacable.

No these never came in a GM. this is out of an '01 Dodge. and going into my '98.5 Dodge to replace the NV4500 thats currently there.

How'd you pull that off? Low oil?

It can be a PITA to pull those apart. I had to use 15Klbs to pull one apart last month, pretty easy trans though, just very beefy.

I picked it up cheap cheap....... because it was "seized" run low on oil and the OD bearing failed and welded itself to the shaft and took out some other stuff.

4x4 Vibration Dampner

I pulled the rear half of the case this evening - there is a dampner installed in the rear case extension. From what I understand this was used in diesel applications and some gas trucks. Any advantage to running this thing or should I just replace it with a spacer?
