Offsetting rear end gears with power?

I have been looking for an article with no luck maybe one of you can point me in the right direction! I have highway gears in one of my trucks and will change them eventually but I got to thinking is there a way to offset the doggy-ness off the line by building the tq/hp power band in a motor to compensate. For those of you who read my last post about buying a 6.0ls the guy sold it out from Under me and wouldnt answer my texts. So is the world. I should add the motor I was thinking about toying with is the one that’s in it now which is just a stock 350.
 
So if I made the motor have more low end torque or high rpm horsepower would it make a difference?

Simple things like a better muffler or air cleaner can add some, but there’s always a cost.

To get a 350 to pull well, you need to pull the pan off and dump half the parts out

I get what your saying. Budget isn’t really a big thing(no I’m not rich) but I figure I could swap the cam and intake to get the right power band for the gears. The budget is as much money until it doesn’t make sense. You know what I mean. If I just swapped the cam and intake that would be worth it. If I have to rebuilt the whole motor I will just wait to swap an ls in
 
Punting a 6k pound truck takes some work

For a 350” engine a 210/220 duration at 430-440” lift is probably going to do best

Look used for intakes, make sure to match to the carb so you avoid the adapter

Forgot to add

What dizzy are you using? Some timing tuning and good fuel can make some pretty good gains. Just be careful of too much load creating detonation
 
I’d rather gear than try and make up for it with power. Adding gears doesn’t affect driveability in the sense that the power band gets moved around or you gotta deal with tuning issues. Do the gears and if you decide you want more power then you can reap the benefits of both. If you’ve got 3.08’ or 2.73’s, even a 454 is gonna feel like a dog off the line.
 
I agree with both of you. My 77’ has a th350 and I would like to keep the tires down to like a 31 so I can’t gear to high or I’ll lose my highway speed. In a perfect world I would have an o.d. Trans but I’m just trying to make the best of what I have until I swap other stuff in. I drive up north a lot like most Michiganders do on the weekends which can be anywhere from 2.5hrs to 8 depending on where and what I’m hunting. My last truck which I still have is my ‘84 k5 and I kinda went over board and over built it for what I need. A reminder to all that it’s a good idea to really lay out what it is that you are building for and not get to excited and start building a rock buggy when your just headed to McDonald’s….. lol. I am finishing the body work up in the next couple weeks and then I have to put in the hvac stuff( truck was originally heat only and I just picked up all the a/c stuff up from a suburban) so I will be doing some more cutting. So I’m moving along I just wanted to see what you guys had to say. Thank you guys
 
Not sure about your total curve, but 36* is pretty standard. I try to get it in early

I’m not sure if your talking to me. I didn’t say anything about timing. Or am I missing something?
 
Yep talking to you. Just making sure your current timing curve and total is doing work. Lazy timing makes lazy gears worse
Ok I thought maybe your post was intended for another conversation. So as it sits I have no plug wires or gas tanks or fuel pumps. I have all these items including a harness and switching valve from jabin wood off Facebook(which is really nice by the way) in boxes. So I don’t know what the timing is as of now. I bought the truck, it ran like crap because the original owner had a Holley dumping twice as much fuel as it needed and 30year old spark plugs. So I got it in the garage and ripped it apart.
