Oil cooler elimination???

Ok I got a 1990 k5 and i keep smashing that stupid oil cooler, or ripping a line off it every other time i go wheelin. Most of the damage is due to running in thick brush/small trees(private property, its gettin cleared anyway). And its hard as hell to find the coolers/lines. I just want rid of the thing, so my question is, does the adapter that has the lines coming out of it just come off and then i can put the filter on like normal, or do i need the adapter off a regular small block?

You need the adpater off an earlier non-oil cooler engine.
